subwoofer suggestions for two channel audio

hi all
need suggestion on great sounding active sub-woofer, which brand, model ?

my set up consists of following

Amplifier: Eico hf-81 (vintage so no sub out)
speakers : diy two way 12 inch 16 ohm bass driver with horn tweeter. great mid and highs only lack of low bass.
source : cd marantz dr 17

my requirement is small to medium sized but good sounding sub

I'm assuming you mean a powered sub, right? Any sub with right and left speaker input will work.

You've got some pretty big speakers there. How low do they go?

Finally, what are you expecting to spend? Good subs can get pricey.
 
Have you tried using a bigger amp with your home made speakers? Your bass response will be a lot better if the amp can control the speaker with speed and authority.
 
Dayton 1200's from Parts Express--I believe they are still right around or under $200 each and can handle the speaker level in and out that you need. They'll provide the lower octave that you are looking for.
 
What is your budget? I'd go with 3 or 4 dayton 8 or 10 inch subs.

Google multiple subs.
 
Dayton is currently asking $148 w/free shipping for a Sub1200. Their price seems to vary. A couple of months ago the price was $127.
 
If you DIYed some speakers already, parts express is a great place for you to go. Grab a plate amplifier, and a 4 ohm subwoofer and experiment. Have fun.
 
I am very pleased with the Polk PSW505. It's a 12" powered sub. Hunt around and you can find a new one for $250... and sometimes under $200. There are something like 1500 reviews on Amazon alone for these... 4.5 out of 5 stars. It delivers.
 
Looking at that picture I notice I just purchased my Kenny KD500 and had it temporarily connected for testing, along with a couple of amps.
 
sorry for my late replies and thanks for all your beautiful suggestions. well I've new old stock yamaha yst sw-90 sub to come to my place within next seven days i guess. i am mid lover just looking to get some bass but never used a subwoofer for two channels music so didnt risk to buy any expansive for the first time. lets see how it sounds, has any one here used that sub here?? any experience??
 
I have the same YST-SW90 sub and while I have used it for two channel listening it doesn't add much at the lower octaves. It is in my HT system these days.

stuck in the same quandary as OP myself. Have not used a subwoofer for 2 channel before. My entire 2 channel system is vintage. Didn't want to go expensive on first sub in case it really doesn't work out. Very similar to OP. I am currently thinking about one Dayton SUB-1200 ($148 for 1) or two Dayton SUB-10000 ($238 for two) or two Dayton SUB-800 ($178 for two). Room is 31'x12'x 9' ceiling (avg). Any suggestions on one big or two small or two smaller? I have four pair of primary speakers in the room (only use 1 pair at a time) they are: Focal 826v, ESS AMT-1 tower, KEF 104/2 and ADS L-730. Any thoughts?
 
I see you have two 1200s. Very nice. I would not be comfortable stacking my speakers on subs except maybe the ADS L730s. Are you using your subs for music primarily or as combined HT and music? What is your music assessment of the 1200s?
 
I have a 2 channel, and am very Happy with my with my svs sb2000. 12" @ 500 watts. They make both sealed and ported.
 
Without knowing your budget it's hard to make suggestions, but one great sub will trounce any number of mediocre units.

I have exactly that situation here. Not that two average subs won't make a huge improvement, but let's get real, it's not a fair fight when one unit cost $2000 in 1991 dollars, and the other $148 in 2016 dollars.

If looking for musicality in your sub my suggestion would be a servo controlled model from Rythmik Audio like the F12, not cheap but a lot less than I paid for my servo sub I'm 1991. Check out their site, costs nothing to peruse, who knows you might find something you like.
