I would like to know more about active subwoofers.

What are the different tiers of quality for these? What are the best brands?
Is there a low budget subwoofer that is highly acclaimed?
What should I listen for when auditioning?

Here is what is available in my area:

Technics SB-W33 - $50
Yamaha YST SW40 - $50
Paradigm PS-1000 - $100
Paradigm PW-2200 - $200
Polk PSW303 - $250

I would like to invest for the long term. Thanks for any input.

make sure that it has a low pass filter, is powered, has a big heavy magnet, and is the right size for your room.
 
The most likely weak point of subwoofers is distortion, since the distortion products are at more audible frequencies than the bass itself. If you are going to do listening comparisons, you need a quiet room. Out on the floor of a big box store with all the noise of air conditioning, other people, etc., will not do it.
 
I don't have to buy any of these. I am very content with waiting. From what I have read, the paradigms have gotten some pretty bad reviews.
 
A bit of advice: DIY!

Don't buy a manufatured subwoofer. If you can, build your own to get better quality at a lower price. The saving can be fairly significant and you'll end up with a sub that can pretty much go toe to toe against anything available. Subwoofers are perhaps "the" one audio item that is fairly easy to build and yet can save you a significant amount of money!

I am in Canada. Perhaps you could recommend a tutorial for a specific design. I don't really want to come up with my own.
