Successfully Repairing Speaker Butyl Rubber Surrounds

I have a pair of klipsch kg 5.2's

One of the 10 inch woofers has a 2mm by 3mm hole in it's rubber surround.

Does any one know what type of rubber the surround is made out of ?

If it is butyl rubber i was told a butyl rubber sealant from toyota would work.

If it was indeed a joke that's fine by me this is the internets and sometimes things get misunderstood. On the other hand if it was a an intended bash on what I used for the repair then it was a useless comment and didn't contribute to the thread.

I brought this thread back to life because after searching it seems to come up now and again and since this was the most recent thread I thought i'd put what I so far have had success with that might help someone else and to add to the list of things other people have tried already. By all means contribute away.

Oh, what might be confusing is the quote system. If you quote any thread, it will show up in your reply. But if you quote multiple threads, they will all show up in your quotes unless you either do them one at a time in the thread you want to reply to, or hit the remove link at the upper right of each quote when replying.

Best to just read one thread at a time, quote the posts you want, and type your reply below each separate quote. Or reply to each post individually that you want to discuss. Hope that makes sense.

hey, nice of you to send me an email, i tried to delete because it seemed i was unintentionally repeating the same reply 2 or 3 times & i got confused ! if you can repost it thanks, I wanted to say thanks for the good advice on the surround repair. this is a good site. I'm used to stereo gear but i have to get a little more computer saavy....thanks for the info on that also.

Here's John's post that disappeared, a couple of spellings corrected:

"i went through all that internet searching as well. i found that my rubber surrounds are butyl (a synthetic rubber) & started looking at pressure tapes but i worried about thickness,wound up checking out flex seal but i wasn't convinced on that, i read about the goop products :shoe goo etc. because some posts elsewhere say that worked but i'm wondering if that is what they tried for you but got brittle. it makes sense bike repair because the tubes are butyl. now i see this & know it's right. i got old 93' speakers paradigm 5SE mk2.(thrift shop $25 mint) back out of storage.they work good & are putting out excellent sound, i can feel the bass pressure, & they don't seem affected by the small tear i put in the surround but of course i still can't live with that tear. i'm gonna get some of that glue, i know it will work. it's exactly what i was looking for for the past hour( & thinking about for weeks) shoulda' came here 1st. live & learn. i'll be back after the jobs done for this & for regular browsing etc. in between. i also gouged one of the poly cones. deep but it didn't go through. i'm going to try to find something to fill it in so it's less noticeable . i'll just feel better if it looks better....many thanks !"
 
I have a woofer of unknown origin/surround type (nitrile/butyl) and I am planning to try bike tube cement on it. I will update when I know if it worked.

There is some separation of the surround from the cone as well, I wonder how this stuff works on plastic. Maybe super glue for the plastic bond.
