What speakers would you suggest for a price range around here?

I've been eyeballing HPM100's, Advent Larges, Primus 360s, and some Cerwin Vega stuff.

I have a pioneer sx-850 to drive them with.

What other suggestions would you make?

For $450, you should be able to do more-than "well" in any of your above listed catagories...In other words, I dont believe any of those speakers should run you that high..the HPM 100's comming closer to that figure, but I think you should be able to get by for alot less...As for reccomendations..I also have a Pioneer SX-850 and have a pair of Advent Legacy 3's. a pair of Pioneer HPM 40's, and a pair of Cerwin Vega D-9's. I enjoy then all, however that being said, they are all different sounding speakers..The Pioneers and the Vega's are definiatly a 'West-Coast" sound, and the Advent being more of an East Coast presentation. To answer your question, I would listen to some of examples of each, if you can, before laying-out your hard-earned dollars...You may greatly prefer one "Sound" over the other, or may find that you can enjoy each for their own attributes..That being said, the SX-850 has alot of "Guts"...and you should have no problems driving either of the speakers you mentioned. Good luck in your search!

You could also pick up some Dahlquists, Maggies, or Apogee's for that much. In the Apogee line keep an eye out for Caliper's, Stages, Slant 8's, the smaller models. These speakers IMO offer the most bang for the buck you will ever find. And yes I'm biased toward Apogee, soo..... nuh!

i scored just fine for my intentions with a GREAT condition pair of advent larges for 250 dollars. that's running a bit high for advents, but they're in great condition, and my leftover money is going to either buy me grado 125's for drunken 4am listening, or another pair of advent larges for stacking.

For that price range, I'd recommend the Klipsch Forte'. The best 'bang for the buck' speaker ever made, in my opinion....

Perhaps a pair of JBL L65's might go that low, as well as some of the 4311, 4312 monitors. A pair in the Klipsch line, maybe some Cornwalls that need some TLC. ESS Heils might not be out of the question. If I had that kind of $$$$ to spend, I'd look for a variety of quality sounding units to slip down into my price range. Head to some used audio stores and catch a listen to some quality stuff, then you can make a good decision. You're the one who is going to listen to them. They need to sound good to you. Good Luck, Brad
