Suggestions for Lambswool Linen Replacement

I would call and explain that you are using it for speakers where sound has to go through
and ask them the TPI of that specific linen because I went by the pictures and ended up
with 25 TPI that I really don't want to use. I think they're based in NJ or NY.
Please let us know how it works out, we all need a reliable source.

This one is the real bargain:

This is IL041 as posted by zcon67 at CSP, I can't find my sample but I hope that it looks as good:
It is from this thread at CSP where in the 11th post genek post a close up of real 1970s AR
grille cloth. If you look close, there's a fairly thick thread and then 3-4 very thin threads and
real linen like this has a similar pattern:
The weave looks a little tight but it is hard to tell, looks like real linen.

I called Ulster Linen and spoke with a very nice lady regarding the Oyster Linen fabric. She told me that this is an open weave which would be very good for speakers and acoustics, but she couldn't give me the exact TPI count. She just said "way less than 100" which doesn't help much. However, she did offer to send me a free sample of the linen which I happily accepted. So, after I get that I will post a picture and we can all get out our magnifying glasses and count the threads! :D

Thank you Pete. I guess I should have looked more on both this site and CSP before I posted, because I'm not the first person that has asked this!

fabrics-store charges a lot for shipping and that made me think of Amazon (Prime) looked there and
there are close up pics and some decent looking ones:

Don't know about the colors, but Amazon returns are easy, and arrives the next day.
Notice all the different shades of gray.

Also my last order, 2022 from fabrics store was IL041 in Oatmeal which they do not list anymore, now
it is Mist color, no idea if they just changed the name.

I ordered more (since I have a lot of speakers to do) of the IL041 but the only color other than red
is Mist. It is a very light silvery grey, and it is also a very open weave with tiny threads, but no large
threads like the original. It does have slub which is random areas that are much thicker that makes
it look like real linen. I have a pair of Advents here and I've seen them in what looks like light brown
burlap, but also in more of an oatmeal that I like a lot more. I want more of an oatmeal color and
I'll try to take a picture of this new Mist material next to the Advent oatmeal.
I'm going to keep looking, this time on Amazon for something closer.

This looks better, it is very open with thick then several very thin threads, and slub to make it look
like linen - actually it IS linen. It is very light grey almost white as far as I can tell, that is #12:

Pete - that's pretty nice - definitely one to consider. I think I still like the Ulster Linen the best at this point. I got an email that they mailed the sample last Wednesday, so hoping that it comes today or tomorrow.

I recovered my stacked Advent grills this past weekend. I used the fabric that I've seen recommended lots of time on here and CSP - Guilford of Maine wheat. I think it turned out pretty well, but your comments on the weaves and thicknesses of these different fabrics has me worried that it's too dense. Sure looks nice though, and sounds good to me.

Here's a picture of the stacked Advents, along with some AR project "friends" I'm working on - AR4x (complete), AR2x, and AR2xa.

The sample from Ulster came today. It's really nice - I like the look of it. It's very sheer and a nice white color. I counted the TPI and I count 20. I will include a picture next to my ruler, and the fabric on top of my marble countertop so you can see the pattern better. Now the bad part, for me anyway. I went to order it even with the $33 price tag. The shipping cost to Nebraska where I live is $30!! I like this a lot, but not for $63.00. They do ship it rolled up on a tube, but that's still outrageous. The fabric I ordered for my Advents came on a tube also and was about a third of that shipping price. They are based in New York, so maybe some of you east coasters would get a better shipping rate than me.

Found a store on eBay that sells the Ulster Medium Weight Oyster linen fabric in the same width and the same price as Ulster, but has no shipping charges, so I ordered it. It looks identical to the above, so I'm hoping that's the case. I saw on the Ulster site that they have several listing numbers for Medium Weight Oyster fabric. We'll see...

Update: When I tried to purchase the Ulster linen from their website and it calculated the 30.00 shipping charge, I sent them a note asking them why shipping was so expensive. A nice woman from Ulster just called me and said their website doesn't always calculate correctly on locations, so she was able to calculate shipping at 12.00. Still high, but with today's shipping rates much more reasonable. It is going from NY to Nebraska. So, knowing that this is for sure the fabric I wanted, I placed the order with her and cancelled the eBay order. I would suggest if anyone purchases this fabric to call the store directly instead of placing an order on the website.

That looks excellent, has thick and thin threads and slub, very nice and 20 tpi which is
correct for AR speakers, looks nicer than the Advent cloth.
