Super Heresy (first try)

I've "restored" 7 sets of H1's over the past 6 years. I found a set of empty H1 cabinets in Birch Raw a few months ago and thought I'd take a crack at the Super Heresy.
I've taken them a step at a time. Sanded and refinished them with black satin, procured K-77 tweeters (may try SMAHL later), K-55-V mid drivers with K-700 horns, E-2 networks that were recapped, and went with the Celestion TF1225e woofers.
I assembled them last week for a test run. I think the recapped networks are doing a fantastic job with the highs and mids. They sound much smoother than my 1977 H1's in Walnut.
The bass is very tight and thin though. Celestion says they need 40 hours break-in time.
I'm going to port new backs this week and add the egg crate foam and see how that improves the low end.

If you don’t change the tweeters and port them, what’s “super” about them?
As I said, I’m going to port them this weekend and add the egg crate foam. “I've taken them a step at a time.“
I’m curious to see how incremental changes affect things.

They’ll be bass shy until you port the cabinet

Wait.. tf1225E?

Different specs than the tf1225 that myself and others are using
Yeah, I thought I'd try the newer version.

The Celestion TF1225 (without the 'e') is the simpler, older, or lower-cost version, while the Celestion TF1225e (Enhanced) features significant upgrades like a Kevlar-loaded cone, sealed surround, double roll surround, and a 2.5" edge-wound voice coil for better excursion, lower distortion, increased power handling (300W RMS), and improved mid-bass performance in PA/DJ speakers, making the 'e' model a superior driver for professional sound reinforcement.

I would not call the difference between the 1225 & 1225e significant, but they are very similar. The 1225 has all the basic features of the series (all you named off). The 1225e has more power handling, slightly more xMax, is1dB less efficient, has a slightly bigger magnet (which may not be good sometimes) and a few Hertz lower Fs.

If you have not simulated it (the 1225e), don't assume it will work as intended.

When complete, the SH sounds best with some low-end EQ/PEQ.

Yeah, I have 3 weeks to return the Celestion's. I'll let you know how they sound once I get the ports and stuffing in them.

When I did my first pair, I did it piece by piece, although I did the ports first. I found the K-22-K delivered rather deep bass (I don’t have a mic at the time), but the sound was really wooly and indistinct. The woofers, in my case, Eminence Delta Pro 12A really tightened it up. At this point, having done woofers, damped the mid horns with rope caulk, changed the gaskets and added foam to the inside of the boxes, I questioned whether the sMAHLs would make much of a difference, as they seemed quite dear. After a couple weeks, curiosity got the better of me and I placed an order. Once installed, the difference was quite distinct and the sMAHLs really highlighted how utterly deficient the K-77 dog barkers really are.

My advice would be to get them asap and get the L-Pad Dave offers, as they run about 2dB hot. They sound wonderful, but the extra sensitivity can get fatiguing after a while.

Thanks for that Gigantic! I really appreciate the insight and experience and am glad I didn't go with a K-22-K. I sealed the tweeter and mid horns really well, but haven't yet tried dampening the mid horns (one step at a time!).
I'm hoping the port relaxes the base on the Celestion's.
The recapped E-2 networks seemed to have made a huge difference (to my ear) for the tweeters and mids, especially compared to my all original H1 Walnut from '77.
I'll consider the sMAHL's at some point as well.
Again, thank you for your insight!

Ok! I got the ports installed in the new back panels, installed the egg crate foam. What a difference! They have bass!
The updated caps have really made a difference (compared to my completely stock pair). There’s separation between the lows, mids and highs, and the bass is fuller.
So far I’m pleased.
Once I sell my Cornwalls or the other Heresy’s, I’ll look at installing the sMAHL’s.

Well, final (?) update to my Super Heresy journey.
I installed a pair of B&C DE10-8 drivers with "original" style elliptical lenses.
This set up is very different than the K-77's. Things have smoothed out even more top to bottom. The mids don't feel quit as harsh and the highs have smoothed out as well. Less separation between the 3. The highest notes don't seem to come out until (it seems) they're intended to. Less top end "hiSSSsssss" and more smooth "ttttthhhhhhssss".
After listening to stock H1's daily for the past 10 years, this is going to take a bit of adjustment :)
Still very pleased with this new setup.
Thanks to my friend Dave for the new lenses and to ClaudJ and Dave in Tennessee for their work on the SH recipe.

DE-10?

How did you get them to fit? I have DE-120 on Dave’s SMAHL. Tried the De-10 and it will not clear the k700 mid horn on my H1.

Or is friend dave not smahl dave? Those horns look printed

Yeah, printed by Dave Harris.
I think they're a bit deeper/thicker than the sMAHL's, which sets the bigger driver back enough to clear the k700, so I get just enough clearance.
These are a great, cost-effective alternative.
The more I listen to this setup with the printed elliptical lenses, the better they get!
They aren't as "bright" at low volumes, but really shine at higher volumes. Seems like they dampen and manage resonance and provide a smoother, less harsh sound than the k77's.

I haven't figured out how to get my mid horns to shoe in next to the DE-10 yet. When I do, I will reach out.

Currently it works with DE-120, DE-110 Celestion CDX1-1412, Lavoce DN-1.142, Eminence APT-50, and Dayton Pro NEO-8

I really like the DE-10, though its a touch too big.

Hey Dave.. Is your heresy test mule a version 1 or 1.5?

The tweeter cutout was moved about a 1/4” higher on the H1.5 resin k701 version to clear the mid horn flange.
