Man,I just gota say it agein! THESE THINGS ARE ABLE TO PUT SUROUND SOUND IN YOUR HEAD!! I mean no other headphone including electrostats has done it like the old Superex ST pro B's and with good vinyl the room and space between insterments just seems endless at times.The Cars ( living in stereo)Dark side of the moon ,It really just comes from every direction,infront of you,behind you,above,below,and from each side.
I have heard Senn 600;s and own 590's I have heard Grado RS1's and own the 325i's I have had 2 pair of Stax 3's but nothing I have ever heard compairs with these old seemingly unoticed bench mark in headphones.Yet anyone who has ever heard them all say the same thing! Wow! 3D+.How did these get under the radar,and stay under the radar for so long?

very nice example! they even have the ol curley cable,I always change those old ma bell phone cords out for something less stupid and it's always a sonic improvement.

I had those when I was hard at work collecting electrostatic headphones so I always tried to leave them stock on the outside. The coiled cord was a pain though but the real improvements were to be gained on the inside.

What did you change on the inside?,buy the way when I said they where a nice example I really meant it "man those things look like they came out of a time capsule" I see so menny older headphones people have just abused.

It was the usual things that needed to be replaced, foam and other materials on the inside. I also simplified the damping and clamped the drivers in place using the stock pins by bending them into shape. Suprex had some crazy ideas when it came to headphone design and their electrostatics were a mixed bunch but well worth the 100$ and some time if you can find them.

Buying used headphones is a gamble when it comes to their condition and whether they work at all. I found a pristine set of Stax SR-1's (mid 60's) and then there was a Stax Sigma that took me a whole weekend to clean properly. It's amazing how well the fragile ES drivers are holding up after all this time.

I spent the night rolling headphones,Hendrix,Pink floyd,Macy Gray,Jennifer Waren,Lenerd Cohan ect... and some songs just keep expanding way beond normal limites,others seem to play out in your head but one thing is for sure the old Superexes I just got go way outside the range of Senn's and Grado's in a way surround sound can't even duplicate.They are not electrostates but are simply hoalographic in a way you have to hear to belive and they have all the detail of the Grado SR325i's but it isent driven into your scull.

Fix for Superex

I got these awsome old Superex phones as replacements for an old pair just like them so I have had these phones for decades.And one thing that seems to happen in time is the small bolt eats out the hole in the plastic cup if they are not kept tight or the nylon washer gets lost.So I glued with JB weld a washer to the plastic cup then used the JB weld that comes in a gray stick like putty to cover it.the fix should go at least another 40 years.I also use a cut down seat belt pad over the head band to make them more comfortable.
The 2 way desighn and active crossover in these is impressive the bass is just unbelivable and they have a soundstage that go's far beond any otherheadphones including high end Grado,Senns or electrostats I have heard the late 60's produces some great headphones and these where the least marketed and that i s what lead to there bankrupcey.Awsome product horrable marketing.But in head to head demos there was nothing around that could beat these phones and from what I see today nothing can beat the soundstage even now! I challange anyone who has compaired these to find another set that is more musical and engaugeing than the old pro-B's.
One thing that I can't get over about these cans,is you can hear your heart beat when your in between tracks.I wondered if this would happen with the replacements and yah there it was.

I picked up a set of ST PRO BV's to go with the ST PRO B's the BV's are somewhat more forward in there presentation but that might just be because the pads have gone flat and the thin vail of foam is missing so the transducer in right into your ear but a rebuild will tell the real story,I also need to get rid of the phone cord,the coils and cheap dilectric must cause inductaince and capacitance like Grant took Richmand!The headphone stand is now compleate with a beer holder.

I Just wanted to let you know I also love superex headphones I grew up listing to the ST-M headphones and I just recently picked up a replacment pair on Ebay. I also have a pair of the St-Pro_B-IV from 1973. I will post photos of them with my post here.

Just picked up a pair of old Superex ST Pro Bs. I know you've detailed mods to yours on another forum, but I already haunt several forums and hate to have to join another just to find out about these. Could you repost a quick synopsis here? I'm especially curious about the capacitor upgrade - I opened mine up and was unable to find an old cap anywhere, just a small iron core inductor. Anybody got the specific values of the "crossover"? I think I'll put some stuffing behind the speaker as well. They sound okay as is, but definitely could benefit from some mods. What kind of drivers are in these? Thanks!

I still have that pair; ST Pro-B IV, I believe without looking. Didn't replace them until recently (with some Senns). :thmbsp:

The Superex Company was located in Yonkers, New York and produced the set of phones you are probably referring to, Superex ST-Pro B, in the late 60's as I got mine in 1969 for my 16th birthday and used these throughout my college years. They are still in service today and sound as bright and clean as the day the were purchased. I would like to clean up the jack end of the line cord as it was stepped on quite a few times, but aside from some cosmetic clean up, they perform beautifully! Good luck trying to get yourself a pair, but if you can find a set that was well taken care of, the components were built to last.

Superex Headphones.

Superex Headphones were located on 1 Ludlow Street Yonkers NY. I worked with them from 1973-1977.I was their Quality go to man. I still remember the votes we had for a clear body style. The open air headphones we created and also the electostat type were created while I was there.They went out of business in 1979 when the son took over, I really don't really think he liked it anyway.
