Hi!
r1sc here; long time lurker, first time poster!
I have a Superscope R-1220 that's been in my familys posession since my father purchased it in 1970-something. I don't think he ever had it brought in for any maintenance.
I took it apart and cleaned the pots and selector switch with PRF 7-78 cleaning spray (we don't have deoxit here in Sweden). Also replaced some burned out bulbs with LED equivalents.
Apart from looking great, it has a variety of problems:
- Low noise/static on both channels regardless of the selector switch position. Also independent of volume, tone and bass. Exists on both main/remote terminals and headphone jack. Noisy transistor somewhere?
- The tuning signal strength meter does not move. Now to be honest I haven't tried hooking up an FM antenna yet, the signal is ok on most stations but some stations won't come in at all. Maybe boosting the reception with an antenna will take care of signal strength needle?
- Now for the most annoying problem. It sounds... dull. Even on headphones. The sound seems to be lacking mids. Bassy but not very sharp. Voices seems to disappear into the background.
While visually inspecting the boards. I came across this. What are those red pill-looking cans? Capacitors? Also the brown junk below looks like something leaked, but I guess it could also be glue?

I'm a computer science engineer by trade so hardware is not my strong suit, altough I took a few courses in "college" (university here in Sweden, we don't have colleges) in both electronic circuit theory and digital electronics. What I'm trying to say is that I know how to handle testing equipment and soldering irons, should it come to that..
