Supreme Crate LP storage no more??

With the renewed appreciation of vinyl, are we seeing a strange war on vinyl storage? First the mutation of the venerated Expedit shelf into the still workable, but not quite as loved Kallax, and now it seems that the workhorse of the portable storage, the plastic, sturdy, and stackable Supreme Crate is no more?? I just tried to price some out and The Container Store and Amazon no longer list them as available.

While I would not personally use them for main storage, they were the perfect solution for migrating your collection into short term storage or transport to swap meets and record shows. Sure, there are many crates that will fit LPs, but none that allowed them to be safely stacked, one on another!

What's a vinyl lover to do?

Container Store told me the mold they used cracked and they don't want to pay to make a new mold so they discontinued the crates. Container Store is now selling a flimsy "Really Useful Box" that's two or three times as expensive. The new one looks like cheap translucent Tupperware. A clumsy and greedy corporate move.
 
I have the Really Useful Box designed for hanging file folders (25liter, 12x12" for scrapbooking, upc = 5 060024 805888) and the Eurolite LP case designed for DJs. I like both, but rarely use either for LPs.
 
I am super bummed about the discontinuation of the "Supreme" crate. I agree, they are simply the best for transporting. I have 9, I would have stockpiled had I known they were going to be discontinued. I was buying 2-3 at a time as needed. If anyone finds a new supplier please share!

The problem with traditional milk crates is that the inside dimension is slightly less than the width of an album. The larger one you listed will work, but at 18 inches wide, it doesn't have the same appeal as a properly sized crate.

Just about all of the copies are not stackable they are too short or they are really cheaply made.
 
I bought these precut kits, $30.00 ea., thought I could do better. So built a few of these for my daughter's. Heavier built, prolly about $7.00 or $8.00 in material.20171016_081339.jpg 20171016_081358.jpg

They must have downsized them, then. Back in the day when we could steal these from behind the commons in college, they fit perfectly.

I just measured one and it is 12" clear inside. Wisconsin is the "dairyland", so maybe they are bigger up there?...:)

In Canada the change came when we went metric (from 1 or 2 quart to 1 or 2 liter cartons). Suddenly the milk crates were a little smaller than 12-inches, and I don't think that was a coincidence. They lost a lot of crates to record storage. Being an old guy, I have 5 of the old-style. Something to look for if you ever go to a garage sale.
 
I ran into the too small milk crate problem the other day. I had about 50 records I needed to temporarily store while I did some rearranging. I had a couple of Pet milk crates in the shed so I thought, "that'll work". I was wrong, too small. I've got a ton of left over pine 1X4s so it looks like I have a weekend project.
 
The ones in the above link are supposed to be 13" x 13". I assume that's OD, but I doubt the sides are an inch thick. I say order one for 6 bucks. If I had the need, I would order one, but I use the handy dandy AK single-sheet-of-plywood bins.
 
Somewhere around here I have a couple of crates from Staples that were intended for file folder hanging. They're constructed like your classic milk crate, but they fit LPs nicely. I don't believe they will stack though.

I like Bigtuna's solution. I have something basically like that for my 78 collection. It actually came with a bunch of freebie 78's and I think the crate was the most valuable part of that haul. Most of the records were either trashed or just awful. Building copies would be easy too, just need some light duty lumber and a tree carcass butchering machine to make it fit.
 
There was a guy locally on CL who was making interlocking hardwood crates specifically for record storage. Securely stackable, but small enough to actually carry when full. Didn't follow up, but I'll try to get a pic if he pops up again. Last time was 6 months ago...
