Sure 1000edt vs. M97xE?

Hello fellow vinyl fans. I recently picked up an Lab-440 with a Sure/Realistic 1000edt cartridge (RS 8t Stylus). I'm very pleased with the sound, but wondering if I'd be well served by upgrading to a Sure M97xE cartridge. Just how good was the 1000edt, and is the M97xE a better cartridge? Thanks for your help in advance!

Specs are the same. Same tip (.2 x .7 mil elliptical). The M97xE has a thinner cantilever, and has the brush which acts to dampen resonance (a plus with the s-arm) and aid in tracking. It is very popular as you can read on posts here and reviews at Amazon, but some complain about a slightly rolled-off high end. Some have found ways around that though tweaking impedance and capacitance. Many members prefer the older Shures like yours. It's a matter of personal taste.

I am very satisfied with the 1000edt and since the Lab-440 has a straight tonearm, the resonance dampening probably won't be an issue? I've tried this on a couple of suspect disks, but it tracked just fine. Can you recommend a replacement stylus brand/dealer?
 
You know, I was thinking it was a LAB 400. You're right, with the straight arm, the damping isn't an issue. I would definitely stick with the 1000EDT. If you can't find the original stylus, the M75ED type 2 is listed as a replacement, but make sure that's what it is--often they will sell a lesser stylus because they don't have the original. You can also upgrade to the M75HE type 2. Check lpgear and turntableneedles.
 
I've noticed some places recommending the N75BT2 stylus to replace the m75ed. Is that a good idea, and what would be the difference, if any? Thanks again in advance, RevRock

No, it's not that they recommend it--it's all they have. This is what I was talking about when I said they list a lesser stylus. The B is a conical stylus that uses heavier tracking force. You might also see an EJT2. That's a .4 x .7 mil elliptical tracking at 1.5-3g--still too heavy TF for your tonearm. You want to stick with the N75EDT2 or N75HET2.
 
Non-Sure styli?

Hmmm I'm discovering that genuine Sure N75's are hard to come by. What can you tell me about the Phansteil and/or Empire brand of replacements?
 
Don't know about Empire but I've not been impressed with Pfansteil replacements for Shure as I've tried several and found the quality control lacking. I've tried the one from LP Gear and it's a good one. It's made in Japan by JICO and is only a few dollars more than the Pfansteils. If you can't find genuine Shure, JICO is the way to go.
 
Which to invest in, Shure V15 IV or the EDT R1000?

As I am new to posting maybe this is a bit off track.. Just acquired a Technics TT with a EDT R1000 w RS 8T mounted. It sounds pretty decent. The reason I bought the TT was to get the Shure V15 IV cart lying loose on the plinth. The V15 has no tip, so should I splurge on a JICO SAS for the V15 or just stay with the EDT and replace that stylus when indicated? I have heard a JICO SAS on a Shure V15 III and it was quite impressive...Very flat and detailed.

FYI- just received two JICO stylii direct from Japan. They're great, and I'm glad I kept the Sure cartridge. Thanks for the advice!:thmbsp:
 
It's actually for the original M97. It will fit the M97xE but requires a little trimming of the plastic on the stylus. Never tried it, but tried JICO's N97HE and it sounds great. Also tried the N95-SAS for the M95 and that is terrific. That will also fit the M97xE, but has no brush.
 
Oops -- I should have written "on the" and not "for the"... thanks for the correction.

One review of the M97xE I saw mentioned that the owner had to play it for about 200 hours before it was fully broken in and could have its true character determined... could some of the negative feedback have been from folks who didn't allow for that? It got me thinking about how long, at approximately 15-20 minutes per side, it would take to reach that -- but I see instances of the cartridge being tested on one or two albums that the owner is fond of or very familiar with.

The feedback for that review also brought up the subject of external mods, as you mentioned -- increasing it from the usual 47K to 62K (I'm guessing that this is series resistance* in the phono preamp). I'm in the process of recapping my two receivers, and am going to look into this while I'm at it.

*no; looks more like parallel resistance, actually
