surrounds for JBL L166

bryana

You have my stapler!
I recently came across a pair of JBL L166. Nice cabinets with the funky egg crate looking grills. THe grills were orange but the owner painted them black.
Of course the surrounds are gone on them. Can somebody familiar with JBL provide a source for the correct surrounds?
Thanks Bryan

I've used Rick Cobb many times, mostly for vintage JBLs, and have had good results every time.

You should probably not use the grills if they are PAINTED unless they were painted with the special JBL paint... Although I suppose the original owner used them like that...

Curious why would there be a problem with the grills? they are very opaque and light is clearly visible through them. These are not foam grills but the molded (metal or plastic?) style. Looks like little rows of bumps.
Thanks for the referal on the surrounds. I am anxious to hear how they perform. I have heard they are a refinement of the well known L-100. Have never had the opportunity to listen to those either.
Keep thinking of either trying to remove the black paint or repaint to orange. Kind of liked the looks of the orange in a seventies kind of way.

I was just thinking that the paint would likely attenuate the treble quite a bit, but I don't know for sure how much or what kind of paint they used. Just a thought.
