Switching speaker cables from silver to copper; first impressions.

What is disappointing about the Analysis Plus' is that they stink like cigarettes, and even worse; air "freshener" (my new favorite oxymoron). There may be cat box mixed in there too.

/begin rant/

I've bought some used gear that obviously came from a smoker's house, but these are just incredible. So far, I've wiped them down with dish soap, all-purpose household cleaner, Goo-Gone, and denatured alcohol and I still want to open the windows in the living room. I never would have believed that so much stink could come off of two skinny cables.

Hell, it's even gotten into the skin on my hands and is staying there through multiple washings.

/end of rant/

:smoke:

One of many reasons I don't buy used unless the ad says (and I can verify) "child free, pet free, smoke free home".

I learned my lesson with a Sansui receiver.

OK, so you know you like them...sell these to someone else and buy the A Plus Oval 12 Black. Just an idea....

No freaking way... Back about four years ago I got hold of a set of 14' Analysis cables with the same problem exactly off the A'gon. They were the purple/black/clear skinned ones (forget the model #) turns out, they were the weirdest sounding cable I had ever heard so I flipped them and have been hesitant to try another oval... I just wonder if these could be the same cables???They smelt fowl.
Happy listener!

...Oh crap, dude, I should put a tiny indescrete mark, like a jeweller does in a watch to know he's been there before, a legacy note. I would bet what those damn cables are worth that I had them once. Wow, that smoke and air "freshener" smell has stood the test of time! About the sound I heard, you deserve some details... For me in my kit, it pulled out and spot lighted particular frequencies, like the leading edge of stand up bass, upper end of Tom Tom drums, and some piano bits, acting over analytical in nature and seemed over eager on the leading edge, yet in other ways, jet black holes in ambient acoustic info. Never heard anything like it, and I hope you hear non of this. My deepest apologies if I have now tanted the waters. Again, my kit, my ears, God know!

Far out!

You know, I'm not sure my listening skills and/or experience could put such a fine point on the sound of these cables. So far, I am really enjoying them. I'd say more than the Silver Sonics I let go of.

EDIT TO ADD:
BTW, what did you end up liking settling with?

I still have a set of AQ/WBTs to try out hopefully this coming week.

I spent much of the morning cleaning the stink off them. I think I made progress. So far, this is what I've done (in order as far as I can recall)
  1. Dish soap
  2. Goo Gone
  3. Denatured Alcohol
  4. Goo Gone
  5. Citrus-based bicycle degreaser
  6. Dish soap
  7. Amonia
  8. Dish soap
  9. Clean water
  10. Denatured alcohol
I tested each cleaner on a small bit of printing before using it; it didn't affect it in the least!

I think they may be to the point where I can have company over without worrying.

UPDATE Monday 6/11
Nope, still stinking.

I'm running Coincident speaker cable and IC's all 6n copper through out with exception to mains cables and TT tonearm wire and lead (silver). The thing is, I have Coincident speakers internally wire with their stuff, they are stock that way and I like the balance of sound, and price. We have tried the cables on other rigs and found them very consistant and well mannered. For me they beat out the Zen Acoustics Silver Reference and matrix overall and those were pricey, even used! Again, not to confuse the fact that it is all system dependant and ear dependant. I would liken letting someone else picking your gear (including cables) to someone picking your wife for you, it is completely obsurd. Sorry, it's dirty work, and there is no easy way out (that's also the rewarding part).
Happy (cable searching) Listening!:beatnik:

Several hours into the day now and it seems like I got the smell off them.

Update 6/11: Nope. Still stinking.

Is there someone smoking in here...Brett...did you break out those fancy smoking cables again!

just got home from dinner out and the goddam cables have filled the room back up with stink! these things need to be destroyed.

I'm going to contact The Cable Company and return them--- too effing mutch.

:sigh:

Too bad those didn't work out for you. At least you know which ones you like. Actually there are a couple of other AP speaker wire to consider also. The Silver Ovals, and the Black Ovals, among a couple of others.

You should be able to go to the classifieds on Audiogon, Audio Asylum, Audio Circle, Canuck Mart, and what not....and find a pair that will do it for you. The AP wires can be found with regularity on any of the sites.

The lesson I learned...you can't get rid of the stink.

I just wrote the Cable Co. asking them to make an exception to their "return for store credit only" policy and give me a full refund as I cannot live with this stink and had the specifics of their condition been stated in the listing, I would not have bought them in the first place.

I'll keep ya'll posted.

I laugh at your peuny speaker cables!

picked these AQ's up tonight. they sound and smell much better.

TCC is going to let me return the offending A plus'.
