SX-1050 with slightly different levels between channels

Hey all!

I have a client with an SX-1050 that I restored for him a few years ago. I went to his place last week to install a phono cartridge for him a do a little cleanup on a Marantz 2335 that he just bought.

He mentioned that he was getting a SLIGHTLY higher output out of the right channel over the left, with the balance being set right in the middle. I listened to it myself, and certainly, it seemed to be the case. I mean…. We are talking very slight, but annoyingly so.

I opened it up and rechecked the idle current and the DC offset and found that the right side idle current was about 10mv hotter, so I reset them both to 50mv dead on. It still seems to be an issue however, across all inputs, tuner included.

Any thoughts out there in Pioneer-land?

Put an o'scope on it and trace a signal through to find where the signal drops.

If on the bench connect your signal generator to the AUX input, minimum level. Connect a scope to both channels and then turn the volume control fully CW thus taking the volume control out of the circuit and turn up the generator. Are the outputs equal now? If so the volume control is mistracking at lower volumes. If the outputs are still not equal you can now troubleshoot knowing there is an actual problem.
