pioneer sx-3800 static and humming

Hello I bought this pioneer sx-3800 fluoroscan with 60 watts per channel it has a constant static/humming noise coming out of the right channel when it's playing the radio or cd..AND it still makes that noise even when the vol control is off..I cleaned the pots with deoxit and it still makes that noise..I had it at a shop also and the tech said he couldn't find where it's coming from? The unit was cleaned and lights bulb relaced before I bought it..The seller said everything works but when I got it it had this noise..CAN SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE ME FEEDBACK ON THIS..need help!!

Well, firstly, the problem is in the signal chain after the volume control. This alone eliminates a lot of potential problems. Also, since it is one channel, then the power supply is not the likely culprit as well.

If you have a schematic of the receiver, can you post it here? This will help those who can help sort out the problem.

Given that a tech has already looked at it, does this problem happen _all_ the time or only occasionally?

Your best help is in providing as much detailed information as possible to determine where the problem is _not_. We're all 'armchair techs' here and rely on that to help you.

Cheers,

David

Thanks David..it does it all the time playing and when the vol control is turned off..also does it with head phones.I'm not a tech, bought this unit on ebay seller said it just got cleaned and bulbs replaced and works well.my surprise it has this static and humming..I uesd deoxit on the inside where the controls for vol,bal..ect.The inside was pretty cleaned..Then I took it to a local tech..He said he could hear it on some speakers and not on others??I paid 50.00 for that..I can hear it on both sets of speakers..Pioneers 15" 3 ways and 12" 3 ways..and a set of cheap magnavox 2 way speakers..

I forgot to mention I do not have a copy of the schematic.
The unit plays very well...kicks butt to tell you the truth..But that
static and humming has to go..You should hear it when i'm playing
my stealy dan cd's..

Dude, I have a 3800 that I think has a similar problem, but the static / hum comes and goes. I'll be watching this thread. Might ask if Markthefixer has any ideas. Was yours shipped and / or handled roughly? I think mine was which may have contributed to the problem.

irishcowboy has posted SO many (four!!) threads on this that even I found it hard to keep track of him. BAD form.....

He has gotten a preliminary answer to the LAST thread he started from me on 01-14-2008, 10:39 PM and I was waiting for him to post again... with more info.

Pull the pre-out / power in jumpers and see if it goes away, then take a pair of cables and connect right pre to left power and left pre to right power and see if it moves.

Is the balance between the channels ok, or to get the sound balanced, do you have to move the balance control off of center?

Those deceptively simple instructions will yield a LOT of information as to preamp or power amp problems, volume control problems, balance control problems and a few others.... which will start moving things in the right direction

As for the manual, it is available from AK's Pioneer Forum's Pioneer database.

You can have all the breaks you need,:D just give us(me?) a break too, (coupla days ? not hours ) to find your posts and respond... (just a friendly heads up: the only reason the higher authorities on the board didn't notice and (mention/ do something about ) your multiple threads was that the threads had slightly different titles and were a few hours apart)

Now, down to business:

If I am to have any hope of assisting you, you need to download and read / study the service manual. As a member you are entitled to download it *free* from the instructions in the pioneer audio forum. Next:

Connect the speakers you can hear the noise on, and then:

1: Pull the pre-out / power in jumpers and see if it goes away,

2: then take a pair of cables and connect right pre-out to left power-in and left pre-out to right power-in and see if you can tell if the noise moves.

Is the balance between the channels ok, or to get the sound balanced, do you have to move the balance control off of center?

When you do these test, the only wires connected to the receiver should be the 4 speaker wires and the power cord. Nothing else... Don't need music to hear if the receiver is making it's own static and hum.

I await your answers to these questions...

( and if you don't think I'm current/qualified on the sx-3800, I own one that I just fixed the power supply, amplifiers and a few other problems, *including* having to replace a bad volume control with a cracked internal element!! In fact that sx-3800 is only about 8 feet away from me right now...)

I'm sure every unit is different but I had a unit that was giving me a low hum as well with the volume completely off. Mark was in the process of walking me through the troubleshoot and when I removed the bottom plate the hum went away. Put it back on and it came back, temporarily, and has not reared its ugly head since. Weird. I can't explain it but its gone. Maybe a loose connection or a grounding issue. Just a guess. At any rate, Mark is the one to help you through the process if you are willing and follow his instructions. He is an asset to this forum. Good luck and hope you get your unit working properly. That is a nice unit.
Generally, new members are expected to introduce themselves and make a few postings before they jump for help. Posting etiquette and all that.
Welcome to AK and enjoy the forums.
