On a Whim, went up to the local Value Village to look around. Found a SX-424 in 7.5 of 10 shape. Couple of Dial Bulbs burned out. Both channels worked. No static on controls, tuned in well with finger on antenna lead.

Was SHOCKED! It had Four...:yikes:..YES FOUR (4) Speaker connectors plugged in to the back! And they wanted $30.

While I was debating :scratch2:on getting it, they announced 50% off on ALL ELECTRONICS for the next 30 minutes. That SEALED the DEAL!

Got it home, and checked my parts supply. Had about 80% of the caps. So replaced everything that I had a replacement for,(made a list of the rest of them and added to an order for Mouser on Monday morning. Replaced the power supply diodes, and Cleaned and De-Oxited the controls. Removed the 2 dead bulbs and moved the remainder around so the light is fairly even on the dial. Replaced the Stereo light(burned out). Cleaned the Tuner with CRC QD Electronics cleaner.

Hooked them up to Minimus 25 (test speakers). Now I remember why I got the SX-434 in 1974. The 424 may be 3 watts less than the 434 but it sounds more or less the same, Good bass, mids and highs. It runs out of steam fairly quickly, but for background or headphone listening it's perfectly fine. Gonna re-arrange the bedroom setup now. The Minimus 25's are a good match for the 424. And they are small enough I don't have to move furniture around. Pluss I don't expect to run 4 speakers on it, so 2 of the connectors will go on my QX-9900.

Best $15.00 I've spent in a LOOOOOOONNGG Time.

Pics After minor cleaning and work. At this point I hadn't fixed the Stereo light yet. Date of Birth September 1972. Not to shabby for a 38 year old. She's just hitting her prime.

Way cool! I bought my 434 for $10, but it doesn't look as nice as yours. Had a problem with the power switch, which was resolved, and had quite a few lamps burnt out. Wanna recap mine?

Nice score. I had the same one few years ago! I really liked how blue the lights were!

You are lucky you have your speakers connectors with bolts, mine was with the outlets plug ins!

Hi Larry,

wish there were stores like that around the corner here. The only finds like yours can be made on 'the bay' - but too much attention from too many seekers :sigh:...

To set your score in a proper context:
About 4 weeks ago I bought four of those speaker connectors (brand new at least) from a local seller for not yet €6 apiece (roughly $8) - if that seller was like yours I now should get $17 and an additional 424 back !!:scratch2:

Those "bolts" ARE the Speaker Connector lugs I alluded to in the original post.

Frank: I know the feeling. I had been getting Cinch Jones 3 prong connectors, an pulling out the center prong for use as speaker connectors. About $4.50 each at my local Electronics shop. Knowing what the going price was for these on the bay and elsewhere, I figured I paid for the connectors, and got the 424 and some change for free. :tresbon:
