SX-650 A Little Monster ?

mrgates3

Road to Ruin
I have read various things about the Pioneer SX 650 over the past year , and most of the comments are about its amazing power for just 35 watts per.
I have one , and I think its better to compare the SX 650 to the Plymouth
340 V8 . It was called the little Hemi with good reason  The SX 650
imoho is the little Hemi of the 30 to 40 watt class its in . :thmbsp:

I have a buddy at work who bought his SX-650 new back in 76 or so. He likes it so much, he's never felt the need to upgrade. His speakers are BIC Formula 4's which he bought at the same time. I recently sold him a pair of Cerwin Vega D3's, so he had a pair for his garage that he could A/B with his SX-650.

i agree

i am running a newly acquired SX-650(mint NIB) with a pair of CS-A700(also mint) and i couldnt agree with you more. the rich full sound without the thumping bass of a ported speaker makes it a joy to turn this baby on and listen to some music. i have yet to turn it up past 12 oclock because i would fear that neighbors might come knocking at my door. everything sounds so good--from benny goodman live to the beatles --on this set up. live recordings are as awesome as truly being there. Worst Sell can keep their cheap BPC with 1000 watts per channel as i will enjoy 2 channel analog stereo on my vintage pioneer gear and love every minute of listening pleasure

Of all the sx's I've had, I liked the 650 the best. Pound for pound it's a fantastic receiver.

Very nice unit! You also need to try out the SX-x3x series, they sound very sweet also. I stumbled across an SX-636, that my wife ended up working the guy down to $23, and bought it for me. I later bought an SX-737, and I haven't looked back since. I have found that I really love the lower watt pioneer stuff, and you just can't beat the price.

Enjoy,

Ron

I do own a sx 650 and a sx 1010. I must say, although I love the sound of the
650 so much, the 1010 betters it in almost every aspect. It sounds cleaner (less grainy), there is much more depth of sound and it doesn't distort
when cranckin up the volume. On the other hand, the 650 has a bit better stereo seperation I think.
Before I acquired the sx 1010 the sx 650 easy left behind a couple of
newer amps I owned; for there where a marantz pm 450. rotel 971,
Hk pm645 vxi and a Nad c 350 . The much of the bunch I disliked was the
Nad, sounding so unnatural and uninvolving.

I think the Pioneer SX-_50 series were all good. I have owned an SX-1250 since the early 1980's, and recently stumbled upon an SX-450 (the very bottom of the line). I was quite surprised by how much of the virtues of the SX-1250 that it had. Clean looks, easy to use, works well and sounds great. What more does one need?

All the Pioneer equipment I've owned sounds good but I'm going more for the earlier, top end gear. Bottom end stuff is nice but I find it overly bright now, very dynamic yet lacking in detail/clarity over the higher models...not that I don't like it, just my preference. The best one I've ever had is the SX-1250, wouldn't part with that for anything (and I've been asked more than once).

I agree what you say about the base receivers though, I got an SX-424 once with a system and it was amazing for only 12wpc, really drove my dittons like a bigger amp. These little boxes have a much bigger sound then the wattage should allow...my SA-508 used to get used in my main system until I got my 9500, nice for a change to the clinical sound of my Technics pre/power. That was my first silver amp, starting to regret that I let it go now...

I think it goes to show that one usually needs much less power than many people imagine. If you have an ordinary speaker of, say, 8 ohms and efficiency of 90 dB @ 1 watt @ 1 meter, and say you listen at 2 meters, one watt will be loud. This, by the way, is one of the advantages of having power meters, as one can see that in ordinary listening, less than one watt is quite common. I wish I had power meters so I could show this fact to people who visit.
