SX-737 "for parts" resurrection

My first Pioneer receiver. According to my own rule of thumb - the worse the better - I bought a damaged sx737, missing parts, but new veneer on cabinet. Looked like my tech friend tried to give it a chance, but resigned. This whole resto work was economically unjustified mif you count labor, but the satisfaction... And I did it for me, not for sale.

Diagnosis - fried transformer. In my opinion faulty 13V power line caused too high current draw and it ended with a short on one of the secondary windings.

I managed to find a guy locally, who fixed that transformer.

While it was at his place, I started to replace parts. Found bad transistors in power supply board, replaced some of the el caps, replaced all Sanyo capsistors, a725, c1313 transistors, cleaned all potentiometers and switches, found replacement potentiometers because volume and balance ones were missing, made fresh set of knobs as two of the original ones were missing and rest was corroded, anodized them as well as I could, made new output transistor holder "fork" and then it was a waiting game.

Transformer came back. Did some wire management work, installed the trafo, double checked everything and plugged it in through DBT - no click. Dang.

I started new thread about relay click, asking for help. "bad transistor" - how? When it tests well, tester shows it's good and it's bad? Impossible. Well... I'm a newbie. It was possible. I had none to replace and I chased my own tail for a week changing caps, driver and bias transistors, but not the outputs.


I gave up. Sent it back to tech guy who sold it to me - he replaced outputs and it worked like a charm. I assembled it all together, replaced broken glass window with cnc cut clear polycarbonate, adjust ed fm and it's all done.

Well - after a while I noticed poor FM sensitivity (max 1,5 on signal scale) and that volume pot I used isn't that good... Cheap flimsy stuff with rattle - I don't like it. Looking for more sturdy and smooth one online.

Another little victory. Another saved unit. Another receiver in my little rescued stuff collection.

That to-92 transistor was a toast with corroded leg, probably whole trafo damage culprit.

Overall look after internals repair. It came with 15000uF main filter caps, where originally its 6800uF.

New to3 transistor connectors, one as a spare. 0,6mm brass, laser cut at home. I have a 30W fiber laser, so it was easy.

Compared to Sansui G-4500 :) that one is a material for another good story. Maybe even better than this one.

Receiver in its place. Tests are running fine, but this one just wants to scream. Loud, clear and bassy. Maybe it's the volume pot, or maybe it's how this one works but it's no good for bedroom setup. I'm hoping to find out. First I have to buy a proper pot.

Naaah, not here in Poland. Well, not anywhere, as people want professionally made stuff for aliexpress price. These ones were fairly easy to make, just a bit tricky and very time consuming. But I can't find any technical documentation of how were they made back in the day to keep that shiny finish, as mines after anodizing (with no NaOH bath before) are a bit dull looking compared to originals. Also there are many shapes and structural finishes - my best guess is a press and die to cut multigrooves, such as sx x80/x90 or even Sanyo dcx x000

They were anodized.

Meaning those plastic inserts? I bought cheapest aliexpress Alu knobs and cut the aluminum housing to remove those inserts - then I measured them and I bored holes in my diy knobs to Press fit them with some adhesive just like they're originally secured.

Also added rectangular markings - fiber laser deep etch + some black acrylic paint

Thank you! This was a fun project. A bit frustrating as you may remember the thread about protection not engaging and no bias in right ch. But it turned out pretty well after all. All I need now is a pair of pots and new front panel from a donor unit. Hopefully I'll manage to find one online. Also FM is weak, but ai'll work on that all at once when I have the parts.

I two weeks I'm bringing home sx-770, sx-780, yamaha a 760 II and dual cv 1600 + cv 1200 as a donor this stuff is addictive.
