SX-780 - help with a frozen tuning

Hello I'm a newbie here in Atlanta. Actually I've been lurking for quite awhile and now I need some of the famous AudioKarma help.

I bought a Pioneer SX-780 from Ebay a couple of weeks ago with a stiff tuning knob. Gradually it became harder and harder to turn until it just suddenly froze in place. I removed the cover and it needs to be cleaned inside. Would a deoxy or a solvent help, or does the tuning unit need to be replaced?

I love my SX-780 with its beautiful sound and hope to have it around for the next 30 years [when I turn 92].

And is there a tech anyone can recommend in Atlanta?

Here is a past post about the disassembly of a sx-550 tuning shaft assembly. The lube needs to be cleaned out on yours and relubed. Your assembly should be similar in concept, even if the dimensions are different. Be careful to remember the order of the parts on disassembly, and DON'T LOOSE THE PLASTIC WASHER!!!! The final resistance to turning when reassembling is set by the threads INSIDE of the brass thing sticking OUT of the counterweight, then the little nut on the end locks it in, you don't want it to flop back and forth in the bearing, but too tight makes it hard to turn.

<snip>

The picture shows there is a central shaft about 4 inches long, with the front panel mount bearing and a counterweight with string pulley area all held together with a nut.

Disassemble nut by holding firmly the area between the string pulley area and the counterweight with a vise-grips and use a 5/16 wrench or socket to loosen the nut. after it is removed the shaft will unscrew out of the counterweight/ string pulley piece (it is threaded inside at the end for the shaft) and the front panel mount bearing.
