SX-780 issues fixed now distorted sound

since you are here mark, any recommendation on upgrades to the diodes for the main bridge rectifier prior to rick's stk discrete replacements? my main filter caps have already been upped to 10,000uf nichicon ukw.

The four big diodes swap to 1N5404G. The four little black diodes swap to 1N4004 or 1N4005 or 1N4007 if you only have those.
 
(appropriate) new diodes never hurt. If diodes are mechanical assemblies with heat sinking - leave em be.

1n4004 1 amp (10e2)
863-1N5404G 3 amp (sr3am-8)


edit.... hmmm - had I seen eastpoint's post I'd have kept on moving....

thank you. i've got the 4004 and 4007 so that's covered but does the 5404 have to be a 5404g? i've got 5404,5406 and 5408 but non are "g" (which as i understand are for a better(or stable) reverse recovery time)

i'll order them if i have to, i'm not nickel and diming this unit,(and i've always got stuff in my digikey shopping cart) but i'd definately use what i have on hand if possible. if it was a step up from stock. thanks again. btw, that last order i got from you was here 2 days after ordering. that's great service!

5405 5406 are fine. 5408 might be like 4008, with a jump in forward voltage.

Alright. I swapped out the transistors mentioned. Everything looks good, relay clicks and we're good to go.

Next...

I reinstalled the STK-0050+ and now it wants to blow the 4A fuse.

Im stumped on this. Any thoughts?

I think I found the culprit!

I hooked a Multimeter to pin 9 and grounded it to chassis. Relay clicks every time. When I pull ground, no click.

What can I do now? Pics enclosed.

I know, I agree with you. I'm working with what I have at the moment.

Something isn't getting grounded.

Could that be a solder issue? A wire issue?

You do know that the meter's red lead is plugged in to the 10 amp current shunt? The meter's selector switch is set for 200 mV DC.
Should you want to USE the 10 amp current shunt, the selector switch should be set at the (dot) 10A position.

as it is right now, the red lead is almost a dead short to the black lead.....
and any attempts to read a voltage like this should melt a hole in the end of your probe, of course the arc-welder class of the flash might also be tip-off....

As to what you are connected to, that's pin 9 of the GWK-118, AF Assy...The left channel output. Grounded.. I wonder if the module's DC offset was low enough to survive that grounding. Worse than any two ohm speaker....

The modules pins 1 through 9 and then 0 are on the comb like structure jutting out of the side of the pc board.

OUCH, your gonna have alot more issues with those leads. That bare metal alligator clip is a big poof waiting to happen.
 
I will most likely send the pioneer to a trained electronic servicer. I don't want to make anymore mistakes. Luckily from from everyone has described, nothing melted, Nothing BAD happened. I don't have the proper knowledge on how to use tools to fix this machine, I mean, I hooked the multimeter wrong for goodness sakes...

Unless there is someone here who can walk me through how to fix it properly... I'll send it out before someone worse happens. I certainly do want to learn.
