SX-780 versus SX-880

Hi folks,

I have heard that the sound quality of the Pioneer SX-780 compares favourably to others in the x80 line, including the SX-880 and SX-980. Its sound has been described as "warm" and "musical" - terms that aren't often used to describe those other units.

To those who have listened extensively to x80 receivers: what are your impressions? If you had to choose between a 780, 880 or a 980, which would you keep, and why?

I ask because I have a working SX-880 and a newly acquired SX-780 that needs a repair. I might need to eliminate one and wonder if I have a "diamond in the rough" in the form of the SX-780.

Hey Rushfan.
I have had both and like the sound of the SX-880 better,it just seems like the more wattage you have the better the Bass will project at lower volumes.
The SX-780 is much more common than the SX-880.
I would keep the 880 myself.

It's not bad.... rather easy actually....

You'll make back your parts cost and work by selling a working 780, and then you have the luxury of seeing how the 780 and 880 fit your speakers and more importantly YOUR EARS....

Meanwhile the 880 is there to sing to you....

Best of BOTH worlds imho....

Just the opposite, actually! I'm quite enjoying the work so far. I took your advice and ordered two STK0050's from electronix.com today. I figured that I'd replace 'em both while I'm at it and keep the working chip as a spare.

The SX-780 is filthy, inside and out. The case is marred and there's a foot missing. I can see past these flaws and know that with a little TLC, this particular SX-780 can shine. For some reason, I have always loved the underdog.

I don't think that I'll be forced to sell any of my stuff but I have to be realistic too. I now have five receivers and a terrific group of Yamaha separates. Garage sale season has just begun here in Ontario and who knows what I'll end up buying this year!

I forgot to mention, I pried a little more information from the chap at the office who told me that he had a silver Pioneer at home that he wasn't using any more. He's the original owner and he bought it back in '77 after he got married. He says that he paid eight or nine hundred dollars for it.

Hmm... let's see: Pioneer, 1977, white meters ~ $800 or $900. Sounds like it might be an SX-1050 or better yet, an SX-1250! I'll try not to get my hopes up. Even if he agrees to sell it to me, that doesn't mean that it will be cheap. He's going to check the model number tonight.
