SX-950 channel cut out

Hi,

I thought this was happening with only the SX-950 but I was wrong. When I turned the volume up to a certain level, the relay in the SX-950 keeps cutting in and out periodically. I hooked the same record player and PC to my SX-680 and the left channel is very weak and somehow distorted at high volumes. I also switched the Left and Right Speakers at the speaker outputs, same thing. I switched the Left and Right input cables, same thing. In every case, whether the balance knob is Left or Right, my left speaker is weak. The little L/R Power Meters on the SX-680 are identical at every volume levelSpeaker problem I guess. Any ideas?

The power meters are calibrated to an 8 ohm load, and if the load is heavier (like with a failing speaker) there would be no indication until the overcurrent protection shut it down or the outputs fried.

What type of speakers are they? It could be a driver or a failing capacitor in the crossover.

Cheers Mike. The speakers are HPM-100's. It was the speaker wires after all. Ages ago I conected 2 pieces of speaker cables to test something and somehow forgot all about it. There either was a poor connection or the bares were touching eachother. I replaced the speaker wires and she is great. I also took some readings as Chris adviced. All three speaker outputs read the same: Left 0.10 and Right 0.24. I am not sure if these are halthy numbers.

WHAT readings? what UNITS?? Volts, millivolts, ohms amps, milliamps?

Those readings are good. They can probably be adjusted lower, later on.

I should have clearified. I sent Chris a PM yesterday asking how to take the readings. I asked in private because I didn't want to ask a foolish question and look like a real dumbarse (I am sure I looked like a real dumbarse quite few times up to this point) in the main thread. Yet again as Chris suggested, I might make the adjustments shown in Section 9.3 of the service manual. Of course SKIPPING the BIAS adjustments and NOT TOUCHING those settings. Step 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10 only.
