SX-D7000 Arrival

My SX-D7000 arrived yesterday (along with my SX-3900), I'm sure the UPS guy hates coming to my house. The previous owner described the unit accurately, a non-functioning tuner unit (meters wouldn't light up either), but the amp section worked great. This being said, I picked it up for $46. After I plugged her in and did my check, everything was as he described, and I also noticed none of the function buttons lit up. Today I was listening to her (this baby sounds awesome!) while I was occupied with the 3900 (i'll talk about that in another post), I noticed the aux funtion button lit up. I then hit the FM function button and, the tuner section and meters are now working. All function lights are working also. The only thing I haven't been able to check fully is the stereo light on the tuner side, and I understand the bass/treble controls should light (bass slider is busted up pretty good). Any explanation why the tuner section and all the lights started working? Do I need to worry about it going out again. I haven't even taken the case off yet. Any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated guys!

Could be a number of things but when something as simple as bulbs don't light up it's probably a power-supply problem.
I suggest a resolder of all transistors in the power-supply.
Look at page 38 of the SX-D7000 service-manual that's available to download from the AK Pioneer Database.

Given the consistent failure of bulbs on the SX-3X00 series I would suggest an LED rework for a permanent fix. Check the PS issue out first.

dew.

Maybe the shipping jogged loose some crud from some contacts if it didn't work for the seller. Electricity is a fickle thing.

Of course, aside from the resolder definitely a general cleaning of internal contacts is in order. And while you're doing that check to see if there are any fuses inside. I usually find some white crud on them. You might as well replace those even if they look good. I was cleaning fuse holder contacts and the fuse itself when the end cap twisted off! It was loose and although the filament looked intact the inside was corroded.

You may know already but I didn't. My SX-939 printed on the circuit board says 125V fuses but I found 250V will work. I went to radio shack and they only had 250V fuses, then I went to Fry's and the package of fuses says 250V or less, so I assume that's the case with any 250V fuse and wasted a trip. By the way fuses are cheaper at Lowes - $2.33 for a pack of 5 AGC 3 amp 250V or the AGC 1 amp 250V.

Oh by the way the 6 fuses were on the bottom only discovered when I turned it upside down and removed the bottom cover.

Sounds like maybe a cold solder joint heating up and expanding. Do the PS resolder thing.

BTW-I found a copy of that Neil Diamond LP in your avatar at the GW for $ .99 today....gonna give 'em a spin tonight!

Thanks for the advice guys. I got inside and cleaned her up. So far so good. The sound and clarity is amazing. I was listening to "Crystal Blue Persuasion", by Tommy James and the Shondells, and noticed portions of the song I hadn't before. It really stopped me in my tracks. I really need to think about getting a pair of Heresys, afraid I'll stroke out my smaller Klipsch and those HH Scott S-15s. Just have to make my wife understand.

I downloaded the manual, however my schematic reading skills are limited. Is the power supply board attached to the heat sink, or some other location? I apologize for my inexperience and lack of knowledge in this area. Everyone's help is greatly appreciated!

First, ALL the lights and LEDS including the LED speaker indicators are run off of the same power, so they ALL should be affected and the LEDS don't burn out.... If not all the lights are affected at the same time than the switches behind the am/fm/etc pushbuttons are at fault and need deoxit cleaning, thus messing with the power supply is not indicated.

The power supply board is stretched across the heatsink, and is the board with the comparatively big transformer mounted on it... and a LOT more wires of many different colors across the top.

The power amp board has a lot of wires too, on the bottom and they loop right over to the transistors within 2 inches or so, and there is a limited range of colors used (red, yellow, green & orange, brown, blue)

Thanks Mark. Thinking back, when I got it, the function buttons did feel kinda funny. I'll give all those switches a good going over with deoxit. I'll keep you posted, and again, thanks a million!

The intermittent function light and tuner section cutting out is still there. I suppose I didn't clean switches well enough. Is there a thread or post that can help me better access the function switches. They are mounted on the board--so I'm assuming I need to get underneath, it looks like only one screw holds the board in place???? Any help is recommended. Thanks.
