Sylvania AS125A Speakers

Came across these speakers for free, they were an actual barn find from an elderly gent. They're in need of some cabinet refinishing and the 12" woofers refoamed but seem to be well constructed with quality drivers, probably from the 60's is my guess. I took a resistance reading and came up with 8 ohms for both speakers so that part's good. Any thoughts on these or history would be appreciated, I'm very intrigued by them!

I just saw a thread about those or a VERY similar model in the last couple days.
It mentioned black vs. orange domes if I remember correctly.

I had a pair of AS210A's. They were a two way with a ten inch woofer and a large dome tweeter. The cabinets were heavy and solid and the crossovers were well designed. These fly under the radar, but are giant slayers IMO.

I had a pair of the AS-125B's. Larger cab with 1" walls and 3/4" baffle and different grill covering and construction. They like power to sound their best. The mids & tweets, from my experience and following threads, can be a bit fragile. From my experience they need to be on stands to reduce/remove boominess. From the early 70's and 2nd from the top of their speaker line. The price was certainly right!

I have a pair of GTE Sylvania as225a’s that I bought needing foam years ago
The cabinets are extremely thick and heavy, the mid range is housed and it’s own sub chamber

After the refoam I hooked them up to a lower powered integrated and was not all that impressed, but then I hooked them up to 100 Watt power amp/preamp and they blew me away. Really great sounding speakers with solid, full bottom end.
I remember reading somewhere that Henry Kloss was involved in designing this speaker line.

Enjoy your Sylvania’s !

Story of my Sylvania AS125A's Trying it again... Not working for me, also. Well, if you type this in on the Audiokarma search up in the right top of the screen it should work. Sorry. It is nice to be out of the Post Office. Can't believe it's been almost 3 years since I retired from there. Time flies.

I have some AS-125's my sister bough new. They are very good speakers with Heppner Alnico magnet dome mid and tweeters and extensive XO. These are the real deal, not some rack system crap. Super sturdy cabs with beautiful veneer, really nice high quality crossovers, dome mid and tweeter.

Here are mine with a replacement woofer.

I have a pair of slightly smaller ones, that I have finally determined to be AS-105W. Looks almost identical to the ones here- just with a 10" woofer.

My only advisory on these, is that they want to be out in the room, away from boundaries, for the bass to be in good balance. Mine are currently being used in a soffit-mount situation, near a ceiling- I am going to have to go into them, and put in more fiberglass damping material inside, to try and take away a bit of bass bloat. It's actually got TOO much bass, now...

But, out on a short stand, away from walls and floors, they sound outstanding...

Regards,
Gordon.

Funny you say that when I first got these from my sister decades ago I always thought they we're overpowering in the base department as well. When I replaced the woofers the first time they sent out about the same and a little bloated. while back I started swapping out woofers and found that these sounded really good in this and actually have nice mid-range extension that made them sound overall better in my opinion.
