Synchronizing Separate Audio Systems

Hello Everyone – If this topic belongs in a different forum, please advise and I’ll re-post.

Here is my situation … I have several audio systems spread about my home – mainly comprised of descent quality audio equipment each controlling directly attached speakers and in some cases peripheral speakers through in-wall wiring. Most of these systems have a computer attached via a digital or optical input, and this ordinarily provides my audio/video content. Some is stored locally, some of the content on a shared NAS device. It’s not often, but there are times when I would like to synchronize these separate systems so they’re all playing the same content simultaneously; and I’m not exactly sure what the best options are for accomplishing this …. I had thought to have a single server that streams content to the other systems via some kind of a client/server software model, not sure what’s best. Is this my best option, or are there other ways of synchronizing these separate systems ? Any advice / suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you

I do it with Sonos, but I realize the cost makes this an unlikely option for most.
 
You can multi-cast to Google Cast devices. I have one on every system, but you're limited to streaming sources.
 
Cheapest would be a USB FM transmitter plugged into your PC where you control the music. Tune all of the tuners in your systems to the transmitter frequency...done.

In the old days we would use two distribution amps with 6 isolated balanced out puts each and connect all the systems to gether with hard wire. Stereo equipment didn't have balanced inputs back then so Jensen isolation transformers were used. Today I use Apple TV from Mac Apple computers. I have three systems and TV, So One for the distributed system, one for the Stereo system, One for the Home Theatre and one for the Plasma display so I can have Streaming with just the TV display with the Sound systems all shut down. No worries with line losses, ground loops, line terminations, hums buzzes or tweets.
 
Guys - thanks for the replies. I will investigate some of the suggestions and the link to that other thread. Hard wiring the systems together would be tough at this point - I have hard wired Ethernet at each of the stereo locations - The USB FM transmitter idea is something I never thought of, and that could be a good solution since most of the AMPs are receivers and the ones that's not do have separate tuners.
