System after Moving

I haven't posted an update of my stereo lately. I moved to Lansing, MI with my fiance last May. She has been gracious enough to tolerate my habit with switching around gear. Here is what things looked like just after we moved.

As you can see, things weren't ideal. Everything was too busy looking, and the laptop placement wasn't ideal. Plus, the Tigersaurus amps were wayyyyy more power than I needed. After a month or two of this, I got fed up and reorganized things a bit.

I removed the Marantz 1070 and the Tigersaurus amps and added my restored Harman Kardon A300 and a pair of KLH model 14Bs. Things sounded much better with tubes in the system. The H/K amp helped take away some of the harshess of the Sansui SP-2500s. I also made space for my laptop as a media computer. It's also handy for streaming Netflix and other video things. But you know, I still wasn't happy...

Enter the new stylus I asked for for Christmas. An excellent (and affordable) Ortofon 10 stylus. Things were getting better...

Finally, last Thursday it hit me that I had a beautiful pair of New Advent Loudspeakers sitting up north, only being used a few times a year. I almost kicked myself at my stupidity of leaving them up there and listening to my Sansuis every day. So I made the 5 hour trek up north just to switch speakers.

And now I am much happier. So is my fiance. She likes the looks of the Advents better than the Sansuis, and I think they sound better (less honky midrange), so It's a win-win for me. We'll see if I change anything else in the near future...

Very nice. If I may make a suggestion - you should get those speakers off the floor with some sort of small speaker stands. I think you will find that it improves the sound.

Nice! It's great you've found someone that will let you continue your hobby.

Is that an ADC EQ in there? My dad loves ADC EQs and we just ordered a SS315x from EBay.

The speaker stands suggestion by ThomasB98908 intrigues me. How far off the ground do you suggest?

Nightwisher has an excellent eye. The EQ I have is an ADC Sound Shaper SS-100SL. I have used it in the past, but now I only have it hooked up as a signal end from a tape out. I like watching the spectrum analyzer, but I don't modify the sound with it at all.

I am very lucky to have found a woman who lets me have my silly hobbies. I'm even luckier that she wants to marry me!

Hmmmm.... When I sit on the couch It would only need to be up about 10". This is something to think about. Are there kits I could buy? Or should I make my own?

I ditto the stands recommendation. Here's an example with my arrangement, but you could go a bit lower and angle them upwards a bit.

Radio shack used to have a small set of stands for floor speakers that were only about (i'm guessing here) maybe 4-5 inches with a slight back tilt.
You may have to check out e-bay for speaker stands to find something that works. I remember seeing a pix of a members system and all he had was his speakers sitting on a couple of cinder blocks (believe he had thin wood on them to protect speakers from scratching). Getting the speakers up off the carpet will improve your bass/mid-range response and possibly the speakers imaging.

Go to "Pictures Of Your Listening Space" and on page 801 "Louisville S" has his speakers on short stands that you might find interesting.

Looks great. It's good that your lady encourages what catches my imagination. I've been very grateful for my wife's tolerance as well.

And I spot some foobar on your television monitor...
