Hi all!
I posted a ways back in the introductions thread foreshadowing putting a new system together after moving. Located in Osaka.
I’m hoping to get some answers to some questions as I scramble to put odds and ends together. A slightly disorganized mix of room treatment, placement, and accessories questions. If I should move this thread to a different place please let me know! Thanks in advance.
I pulled the trigger on a pair of JBL S2600 which will be arriving tomorrow (!!!) so excited. They are equipped with jumpers (shown in photos). I was hounding after the S3100’s, but there is a pretty marked price difference between the two so I’ll be looking forward to the younger sibling.
Question - can I use banana plugs with these terminals?
A note about my room: 11 x 11 feet washitsu (tatami room). There’s a sliding door divider to the next door slightly smaller tatami room, so I could potentially have about 75% more space depending on the configuration. (Picture of the room attached).
If I use the room on its own, there will be a gap up by the ceiling (shown in photo). Does anyone have any tips for how to manage this variable? Should I even worry about it?
Also, if anyone has any inexpensive tips for livening up a highly absorbent (dead-ish) room, I’d love to hear them! I will be adding various small pieces of furniture and table and what not.
Tatami is a notorious sound absorber, so I’d like to potentially put some small square granite slabs down as speaker stands to raise the jbl’s off of direct contact with the tatami (I also want to avoid indents in the mats as this is a rental). The speakers are 56cm W by 41cm long - if I can find a 30-40cm square granite slab, will that provide enough stability for the speakers? Should I also put some insulation between the slabs and the speakers?
I got a line on a Sansui AU-D907x from a local shop whose owner fixes up units to order. It’s taking quite a bit of time (he says he’s still battling some noise on my amp) but I will be able to get it for a decent price so I’m trying to be patient while I stare at my speakers
Lastly for my turntable, I’m having my Thorens Td 147 shipped to me from my folks house in the US. I’m well aware of the use of step-down converters going that direction, but should I use a step-up to use my table here? Our outlets are 100v and the thorens power supply is 120v. Step-up transformers are a little bit harder to find than the step-downs.
The player currently has a Grado gold on it - if I were the upgrade the cartridge, would you have any recommendations? It came with an upgraded carbon fiber tone arm when I bought it (not sure of the brand at the moment) with a fixed head shell. I’d like to occasionally use my AT Mono cartridge for my Beatles albums, so would it be worth it to invest in another dedicated tonearm? My old table had a very easy removable head shell. Is switching out the tonearm as big of a headache as dealing with swapping out a cartridge?
I will be predominantly listening to vinyl, but will plan on bringing in a cheap dac for streaming and listening to CDs.
