System Rearrangement

Had to do some room rearranging recently so a couple of new setups resulted...

1) Bedroom system. Due to space constraints, I've never had a sound system in the bedroom. However, since I had to empty out a closet where I've been storing a pair of BA A40's and a Sony STR6055, I thought I might as well "store" them in the bedroom.

The setup is far from optimized (speakers too close together and too close to the floor) but it sounds plenty fine for casual background music. Plus even my wife said it looks good :thmbsp:

2) Office set up. I had to move my office from one room to another with very limited set up options. The BIC Model 66's and Kenwood KR6030 sound great together.

Although I wasn't looking forward to all the furniture and equipment shuffling, it forced me to try some new setups. Now I just need some aspirin for my sore back...

Never knew that BIC made speakers...you learn somethin' every day! What drivers are in the Model 60s?

My error...the BICs are Model 66's, not 60's. I had a thread on them some time ago: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=465315

The Model 66's are pretty obscure I think.

They don't look (or presumably sound) like the more common BIC Venturi horn designs. The 66's are quite decent speakers... very heavy and well made and a pretty balanced sound I think. I do think their mid range could be improved... a possible future project.

ok, that's three BIC Model 66 owners I'm aware of now (me, blhagstrom, and you)! Pretty exclusive club.. :D

Are yours all original or have you made any upgrades? If I ever get motivated enough, I'd like to look into maybe updating the mid driver.

I've since swapped out the Kenwood KR6030 with a Sony STR7065. Maybe it's just a psychological effect but I think the Sony brings out more in them (better sound stage, better low end).

I never thought to run them with tube gear but maybe I'll swap out my Fortes just to see how the BIC's sound.

Nice, nice vintage receivers! And the old BIC's are way cool, too!

FWIW, PartsExpress.com sells BIC America floorstanders, bookshelf speakers and sub-sat systems, too.

My first intro to Boston Acoustics was 29 years ago, when my college roomie set up a brand new pair of A40's, very much the same way you've got yours there. I was then, and still am amazed by the A series and their clarity. I use A150's and A60's and a 525V in my HT setup, and use a set of HD8's in my small living room setup -- love 'em!.

I like the BA "A" series as well although I wish their cabinets were real wood veneer. At least they don't have the thin, soft, vinyl stick-on stuff like on my Advents which peel.

I have a pair of near pristine BA70's in storage at the moment. They were one of my first purchases several years ago when I started getting back into vintage equipment. I refoamed them and used them for awhile before I started experimenting with other speakers. Although they are not getting used too much now, they're just too nice to get rid of.
