Tandberg 3001A functional questions

Hello All:

I have a 3001A and it looks and sounds great but has a couple of "issues" that bug me. 1) If you have a preset station selected and turn off the tuner, it comes back on in F, not the preset station. 2) When I do use the preset, the center tuning light goes out which is normal, but the tuning needle moves way left. Is this normal? The manual does not address these things.

Hello Gene,

# 1 may mean that the preset memory battery has expired. I'll have to check on one of the 3001/3001A I have at home that have new batteries installed and verify that though, to make sure it isn't normal behavior. It may be they only had the frequencies for the presets stay in memory, and not the tuning mode as well.

# 2 is normal, but it's just the fX light that goes out, to indicate preset operation. There is no center tuning light per se, you use the tuning center meter for that although the Servo light will come on if the switch is on and the tuner is locked into a station (AFC basically). Also, the needle on the strength meter should be pointing to the tuned frequency for that preset, which is marked along the lower part of the meter below the signal strength markings.

I'll post back later after I check on question # 1.

Thanks John. I should have added that it has a new battery in it that does remember the stations when it is turned off. It comes back on in normal (F) but if I hit a preset it remembers and goes to that station. Tandberg should have left the battery and presets off as the tuner is complicated enough as it is. I guess it was cool advanced technology in the 80's though.
 
Yeah, that whole preset tuning system adds a ton of complexity and is certainly prone to failure more than some of the other circuits in these tuners. Still, once you get familiar with the design, it does work fairly elegantly.

That's how mine works and a fresh battery was recently installed.
 
Is there any way to eliminate the preset function entirely? Mine can be manually tuned, but when I take my finger off the tuning knob, it immediately goes to preset 8, which isn't set to anything. If I touch the tuning knob again it will go back to the manually selected station, but I can't take my finger off the knob, or it us back to the unstable presets. The battery is gone and the negative terminal of the battery holder is broken off. How can I eliminate the presets and just use the manual tuner?
