Tandberg 440A strange behaviour in Rec and playback

I love my Tandberg 440A..but it's started exhibiting some very strange behavior lately, that too in the middle of the lockdown!
Basically in RECORD mode within about 20-30 seconds the take up spool starts jerking or stops and the tape starts curling. In PLAYBACK this jerking starts after about half an hour but the tape doesn't get eaten..whats even more strange is that if I power it off and restart playback this odd behaviour starts again only after 30 minutes..
I removed the cassette and just tried rewind and fast forward..FF seems to be okay but REW makes a big whining racket as if something is rubbing somewhere very badly.. I've taken two videos of this and shared it on my Google drive
