Tandberg 64x and a “few” reels lol

Hello all,

So I picked up a Tandberg 64x reel to reel from a friend who inherited it from his father. I have no experience with reel to reel but I love vintage audio and the price while not what I would call cheap seemed reasonable. Before I plug this unit in and try it out should I take precautions like I would with a tube amplifier? Open and inspect or use a Variac etc. He said it came with a “few” reels , below is a pic of one of 2 banker boxes full that I’ve already removed the top row from haha.

If you have either a variac or a dim bulb tester, then by all means, use one. No tubes obviously, but old caps for sure. Having full current hit them after decades of storage might kill a couple. A softer start can allow them to reform, and work successfully going forward.

This is a tube design, actually - will be chock full of tubes, hopefully the nice original ones...

Keep in mind the motor won't be all that happy with either a Variac or a dim-bulb tester (which I wouldn't use on a tube deck anyway) - but bringing it up on the Variac w/o running the motor is a good idea.
