Tandberg TR-2030 — Tips for restringing the dial cord?

Hi everyone,

I made a little mistake today while cleaning the tuner assembly on my TR-2030 and accidentally popped the dial cord completely off the drum.

I have never restrung a dial cord before. Does anyone have a routing diagram for this specific model, or any favorite tricks to make getting it back on a little easier? I am looking for the pictures I took to see if that will help as the service manual does not have enough detail.

Some makes have a really good diagram other times you have to work with it and figure it out. Had to restring my 1055 had took some time to figure it out and get it working right. Stretched cord and had to replace bulb in pointer. Access was not easy and Tandberg did things differently than most others.

Here are pictures inside my 1055 tuning string hopefully it will help if they did similar for later models. Tight in there was not easy took some things apart tried several approaches and reassembly attempts before I got it right. That fine wire I believe I used some Scotch tape to help hold some things on the spool while getting it together. For the corded part my replacement was black so does not stand out well in the picture. One of the more frustrating ones to do the wire had gotten free of the tuning cap.

I have been needing to go in there have sporadic noise issue and after finding the Mark Hennesey article talking about the Lockfit transistor issue that describes the type noise I have been getting and there are lots of Lockfits in it.

There is one user on the site, seem to remember it is @jdurbin1, that has lots of experience with the TR-20xx series hopefully he catches this and can be of even more help later today.

Thanks so much for taking the time to share those pictures and your experience! It is a relief to hear I am not the only one who has found Tandberg's engineering to be a bit of a tight squeeze.

I am definitely going to use your tape trick—that sounds like the only way to keep everything locked on the spool while routing the rest of it. I found some pics of when I first took the cover off and it shows a good view of the pulley. I am going to give it a try a little later and see if I can get it into place.

Also, best of luck tracking down those noisy Lockfit transistors in your unit! I actually just spent the last few days chasing down a terrible static hiss in my own pre-amp and finally cured it by replacing a bad transistor, so I completely understand how frustrating those sporadic noise issues can be.
