tannoy berkeley - odd surrounds

there’s a pair of these for sale a few hours away from me. from the ad, they look, and are described as, very clean. strangely though, the foam surrounds are bright red. they must have refoamed using cerwin vega surrounds or something. should i steer clear of these or would that not matter much?

Tannoys use a specific surround different in shape from all others. I would want proper surrounds on the drivers. The surrounds when you can find them are about 60 bucks. I see why they took the cheap route to the home repair.

I guess it depends on the price and how bad you want them? Affordable, vintage Tannoy speakers don’t pop up that often, at least where I live. So if you can re-foam them or there is a local shop nearby that can do it for you, I still might get them depending on the price and the condition of the cabinets. For me, everything comes down to price LOL. I will put up with some hassle for the right price.

they actually took the original ad down, and reposted for less $ with no picture of the speakers with the grilles off anymore. must have gotten some comments.

Is this on Craigslist or Facebook? I'd be inclined to report them for deceptive marketing. They know that the speakers have non-original, undesirable parts, and are now trying to hide it...

BTW: The Cerwin-Vega foam surrounds are sometimes quite a bit stiffer than the stock Tannoy surrounds. This could upset the bass response.

they’re on craigslist. he does mention that the surrounds have been replaced. also says the crossovers were rebuilt.

if i wasn’t 5 hours away i would go listen to them.
