Tannoy Eatons?

Hi guys, im about too collect a pair of Tannoy Eatons tommorow, i dont really have any vintage audio but i saw these down the charity shop for 20 pounds so thought i may as well give them a go, the cases are shabby but the acctual speakers look very good condition.

i was just wondering what kind of amplifier would be right too power these and if the cases could be redone if the speakers are worth it?

Go get them now before I beat you there.

Even bad cabinets and not working they are worth a fair bit.

I'm leaving now, so you had better hurry!!

i just brought them home :) once back here the cabinets dont acctualy look too bad, i think hopefully a sand down and revarnish and they would look nice again! the good news is they work perfectly and sound (too my ears) very nice indeed! voice repoduction is fantastic. at the moment they are being powered by a modern-lowish power yammaha amp, cannot be a good match but they still sound very nice...id be really interested too hear them with a properly matched amp now:)

Well done, purchase of a lifetime I would think!

Some pics would be nice. The real valve of those speakers I suspect would be more than £300.

I presume that they are 12" Dual concentric HPD.

I had simlar Tannoys and they even worked well on a 6 watt per channel Teleton

Where is this place you got the speakers?

I may not be too far away!!! Not joking!!

I will take some pictures but il have too try and workout how too upload them, havent done this in a while lol.

thats really great there a good purchase! i thought they were worth a shot, would have been nice if i found a nice amp too but hey, thats just getting greedy lol:) but starting with a decent amp would seem the best way.

the drivers are 10 inch ones but luckily there it what appears too me too be "mint" condition.

i acctualy picked these up from the british heart foundation in bournemouth:thmbsp:

Still, if they are the Dual Concentics (prob HPD) the units alone are worth £300+

I'm about 100 miles away, know Bournemouth fairly well.

The thing about Tannoy DCs is that they are easy to drive and efficient (plus sound very good) an expensive amplifier is nice, but absolutely necessary. Good Valve amps are very nice on Tannoys, but usually expensive now, unless a Quad, Leak, Radford turns up in that shop!

300+? wow thats a heck of a lot of money! i had no idea they would be worth anything like that!

where abouts are you from?

i acctualy think they sound nice on the yammaha amp im using at the moment, but if a good vintage amp is absolutely necessary i can totaly understand that, il have too keep my eye out and hope for the best but iv been popping in the shop for quite some time and these are the first decent looking vintage things that i saw. i believe they would sound better on a vintage amp:)

heres some pictures, in there "uncleaned" state strait back from the shop, the flash seems too show blemishes the naked eye cant see, but here they are:)

Absolutely fantastic!!

I presume that the foam? fronts have disintegrated, like they do. Protect those cones from little (and big fingers). Suggest make a thin frame and cover with acoustically transparent material.

I would keep a lookout for valve amps there, or anything else nice.

Your Yamaha should do well on the Tannoys.

I'm in London.

I'm an old guy, know the older stuff better, yours are new(ish) to me.

They look like the replacement for the IIILZ Tannoy. This was the baby of the family.

I will be away from pc for a bit. Duty calls, will check back later.

Great score! Those look like the foam surrounds have been replaced, or perhaps they came with rubber ones to start with. Are the surrounds "sticky" at all?

Do they have enough bass output to satisfy you? I ask because the Eatons used a small box tuned fairly high.

ahh not too far away then! they have the front covers still and there clean, i just thought they would be more interesting too look at without them on but luckily they do have them:thmbsp:

i will certainly keep my eye out for a valve amp! id just love too hear these with a peice of quality equipment from the same era.

the surrounds are not sticky at all, they seem too be rubber? if they have been redone then it seems someone has done a fantastic job with them, they dont scratch or anything.

iv really not taken them close too thier potential yet i dont think so will have too give them a bass test soon, i must admit im abit of a bass lover hehe.

Congratulations on your cheap score. Owned Tanny Little red monitors, SRM 15x, DC-200, DC-3000.....609s and Eatons.....I loved the Eatons very very much.....fun speakers (speakers that love to make music) with good sound to boot.

How are the charity shops in the UK

We get over every year since our daughter and family live in Wiltshire near Swindon. You mentioned this is the first time you found anything of value but you came upon such a nice find I will certainly check out the ones around there this spring. I have never been in any of them up to now.
