tannoy gold 10" question ?

I just bought a pair of tannoy monitor golds with original crossovers. I got them for a very good price, but one of them needs a new cone and hf diaphragm. I got a good price for 2 cones and a diaphragm from the uk. However, my budget is pretty low, and the price is more then I can afford.

I have a chance to buy a hpd 295 which is cosmeticaly in bad shape (scratches, broken magnet cover), but has a good cone, surround and diaphragm. My question is if there would be a big sonic difference, if i use this cone on my damaged monitor gold?

Advise/suggestions appreciated.

Assuming both the Gold and donor hpd have rubber surrounds (not a given, by any means) I suppose you could consider making this substitution. To be honest, though, I'm not completely sold on it.

First of all, you'd have to remove the hpd surround and cone without damaging either. And even if you managed this you'd still be left with an additional challenge, before you even began to try to situate them properly in the Gold frame. The challenge is that the back of the hpd 295 cone is heavily coated with damping compound, the Gold isn't. And since you can't remove damping compound your only option would be to add it to the good Gold cone-- and you would have to make sure you weren't adding too much or too little. That is, it would have to match the hpd cone, pretty closely, I'd think. In the end, if you were successful, what you'd end up with would be a pair of damped Golds. What sonic effect that damping would have, I don't know, but since these speakers were engineered to have cones of a specific weight I'd think deviating significantly from that weight could be a mistake. But as I say, I really don't know.

Another thought occurs to me. Could the damaged Gold cone possibly be patched? If it's at all repairable it might be worth at least giving it a shot. (You don't really have anything to lose in the attempt.) If the fix works out you could possibly then replace the damaged Gold hf diaphragm with the hpd diaphragm. (I think these are the same.)

Obviously the best fix would be the expensive fix, but I think all of us around here understand the need for the occasional improvisation.

Good luck, whichever way you go.

Thanks for replying rusomon. I did patched the damaged gold and repaired one of the connector cables. It looks a bit Frankensteinish, but otherwise sounds ok. Will post some pictures later. I wasn't aware that the hpd295 are damped on the back. I see how that makes it more difficult. maybe I just buy a diaphragm, and wait till a gold cone shows up on epay. I managed to buy hpd 385 cones about a year ago for a good price, but i think that gold cones don't show up that frequently.

Here's a picture from the repaired cone. it's looks ugly, but most of the repaired part will be covered by the dustcap anyways. It sounds good.
