Tannoy HPD 315 vs Advent AS2

I currently have a pair of Advent AS2 that' I've been using for about 14 years but have the chance to get a pair of Tannoy HPD 315 (either in original Devon cabinets, or in custom made Cheviot sized cabs) for free. The catch is that the foam surround on the Tannoy's need to be replaced and one of the tweeters doesn't seem to be working.

They're powered by a Yamaha HTR 6230 right now (which I'd like to eventually replace as well) and most of the music is vinyl played off a Project 1Xpression III.

Would this be a decent upgrade to my system? Is it worthwhile to fix the Tannoys, or would the price to fix them not be worth it?

Thanks for any input!

Great, thanks!

I started second guessing myself after reading some reviews on the AS2's I have. I find they sound good, but not great, so I'm excited to hear how the Tannoys will sound with the rest of my system. Now to find someone locally that can repair the foam surrounds and look into the tweeter issue...

Never heard an Advent vs Tannoy discussion... Prius vs Porsche? Well, they both have 4 tires and a steering wheel. ;)

Lockwood Audio (www.lockwoodaudio.co.uk) or Speaker Bits (speakerbits.com) would probably be your best bet for a tweeter diaphram and foam surrounds. I'd recommend doing both diaphrams at the same time so you don't upset the balance of the force.

Will this be expensive? Yes. Will this be worth the trouble? Again, yes.

Ha ha! That's a good point, I'd never really considered it like that. I'm still learning about all this stuff.

Regarding the tweeters, is it possible it's just a cross over circuit issue, or is it more likely the diaphragm?

I'm in Canada, so I'm not sure if that changes where I should be looking for new foam surrounds. I'd heard that you can special order them directly from Tannoy, but haven't checked with them yet.

Thanks again.

Tannoy doesn't supply parts for these any longer. What's in those is the HPD 315 driver. Could be a crossover problem but I've never heard of them having issues. The tweeter generally goes first if overdriven.

Lockwood out of the UK or Speaker Bits out of Australia are the only ones I'd trust for parts. There may be others but those are the ones I know off the top of my head.

Then you need to find someone capable of the job. This isn't the same as refoaming your standard run of the mill speaker.

Thanks again for you advice. I've been referred to a local guy to do the repairs when I asked at a local shop I trust, but you can bet I'll be asking if he's repaired Tannoys before. Worst case I might have to drive them a couple hours to another city where I've read there's a shop that does Tannoy repairs fairly often. Unfortunately the place in town that re-coned the other pair of Tannoys my father has closed up shop a few years ago to retire.

I'd be pretty surprised if the tweeter was overdriven and blew. These Tannoys have been in the family since they were bought new (my father had a pair in custom made cabs and his father later bought a pair in the Devon cabs). At this point we're not sure which set is which, but both were hooked up to amps that were well suited to them.

Seeing as you seem to have quite a bit of knowledge, I hope you don't mind me asking another question: my amp is rated at 100 wpc RMS and I see the Tannoys are rated at 60w. Is this a safe combination? I'm going to borrow the Tannoy's that were re-coned a few years ago to test with my system and the last thing I want to do is blow them. I've been reading all about power differences, decibels, amplifier sensitivity, etc today and from what I gather, I should be ok, but I'm not certain.
