Tannoy Little monitor gold damaged in Shipping.

I recently purchased a pair of tannoy lgm speakers off that auction site for a hefty sum. The seller double boxed them but only used bubble wrap and no styrofoam boards.

The crossovers became dislodged during shipping and one was smashed very badly. Coils we're completely dislodged, capacitors unfixed board supports smashed.

I'll attach photos to show the extent of the damage. The other crossover is a bit better but still has some parts that were knocked loose and doesn't work.

How well does that auction site provide support for the buyer? Any advice on the process for what I should do next?

I opened up a return and sent photos of the smashed crossover. The seller says he talked to his tech and the crossovers aren't destroyed and could just be screwed back in which is obviously a lie. I just don't want to be scammed.

Definitely repairable, I find a lot of speakers woth similar damage from being thrown 10ft in to the e waste bins, usually just need to glue everything back to the board

Says a lot for the care of the courier...

I did think it would take a very hefty shock to tear coils and caps from a board. I'd wonder what other damage had been done.

To the OP: what is the seller proposing to rectify this (their) problem? Or are they suggesting it is your responsibility to make repairs?

That auction place seems to have moved to a caveat vendor policy; the customer is always right. I think you'd have a good case. Do you have photos of the shipping damage (packaging)?

Since these are no longer in the condition you purchased them, you are entitled to a full refund, including shipping. The seller will have to pay for the shipping to get them back.

This means that the seller is at your mercy, and if you would like a partial refund you can ask for pretty much whatever you would like. Bear in mind also that the seller knows that if you ship these back to them they will probably be much further damaged and will be firewood at that point.

If you need to return these, you should file an “item not as described” claim on eBay. Remember that you only have 30 days from the date of receipt in order to do this. Don’t let the seller delay you.

Full refund including return shipping cost if the seller demands return.

Settle for nothing less.

I'd be concerned about alignment issues within the drivers at this point.

Great that you opened an item not as described claim right away. Maybe the carrier has some liability but IMHO the seller blew it with the shoddy packing and is totally on the hook. Only bubble wrap for #$%#$@** sake. That is lazy or incompetent but either way the seller is totally on the hook. The seller's options are to pay for return shipping and 100% refund including shipping when he gets them back; not pay return shipping and let you keep the speakers, or make a deal and partially refund. He is on the clock to get it settled because if he does nothing ebay will auto refund you the entire amount in a few days.

If you are interested in keeping them and trying to fix them, do you have an amount in mind for a settlement refund to cover the expense and hassle and risk? And for the fact that these are no longer in original condition. If the seller does not like that he can pay for a return, and he does not want to do that and have to deal with the mess. If he takes them back I would bet they get parted out and sold that way.

If there is a claim to the carrier, that is up to the seller shipper to follow up on. And the poor packing job will not help them with that either.

Nice that he double boxed but that is not good enough. Bubble wrap does not protect from bumps and shocks or keep gear from moving around inside the box. I plastic and bubble wrap to just protect the gear from scratches from the actual packing material. Even just foam sheets are not enough, I want a good shock absorber in addition to that. Pool noodles are actually great for heavy items as they are firm but have give to buffer shocks without bottoming out, and can be cut to size easily. The 30 pound receiver below was packed with noodles and it worked well. For speakers like I would be going to another level.

I just get frustrated when I see stuff like this. Regardless of how well something is packed, it can still get damaged but make some effort.

Like was pointed out above, I’d want to know both drivers are in good working condition before accepting any partial refund. It would suck to get the crossovers back together and then find out one driver is locked up, or damaged in some way.
Because once you accept a partial refund the speakers are yours regardless. And then if you had to find a replacement woofer....

With that being said, if you could test out both woofers with the good xover, I would definitely consider a nice partial refund and then keep the speakers. But the seller has to make it worth it to you. Otherwise, make him pay for his shitty packing :)

I wouldn’t bother with any of that until you find out if the seller wants them back at all. If you’ve asked for a return based on not as described condition, the seller may choose to cut their losses and let you keep them and refund you as well. Worst case, you pack them up again and the seller pays for a return and full refund.

I think eBay has changed their return time for buyers, and you may have up to 60 days to return them. My thoughts usually that once something is damaged it’ll never be like new and not worth as much as you paid for them originally. It really depends on how much you want them, are willing to take on repairs and reduced value, and their rarity.

Yup, it would have to be a hefty discount if you want to try to rehab them and the risk in that.

The seller sent me a message late last night saying that he got into a major accident and is in lots of pain. He wants me to give him my email address for the return labels. Says he can't send them through eBay, which doesn't make sense to me. Shouldn't I make sure all of this is handled through eBay?

It definitely seems like the seller is trying to pull one over on me.

Also it doesn't seem worth it to me to keep the speakers in this condition without a very large partial refund and I doubt that will happen. Plus they really won't be worth as much even after I try to get them repaired. I think my best option is to return them for a full refund.

As stated above, only deal through Ebay. The BS alarms are screaming here. First the "my tech says" and now he has had an accident. I would not engage him through email or phone, but stick to Ebay messaging. If you follow the Ebay procedures and he disappears, ebay will pay for the refund themselves.

The innocent explanation may be that he is trying to attach a PDF label to an Ebay message. That will not work, he has to go through the returns page and it provides a spot to upload the label. In his pain, if he can attach the label image to an email, he can upload it easier to Ebay. Though it is not for you to point out options to him, he is selling expensive gear and he has to know or find out the procedure. If he is having trouble, perhaps suggest he call in to Ebay support to navigate to the correct spot.

In fact, you may even wish to call Ebay and get confirmation that you are taking the correct steps and will not send him an email address, and also ask what to do if the label sent does not provide sufficient postage.

p.s. Has he pulled his active listings due to the pain??

I looked at his feedback and sometime in the last year he got neutral feedback for selling Tannoy Little monitor gold speakers that arrived with the crossovers detached from the cabinets. Sound familiar?

DO NOT fall for his story. Demand a proper return or resolution through eBay. They are there to keep you safe during the transaction. If you have to, contact eBay. They will get a solution for you if they have to.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I don't buy the injured story either. Definitely going to contact ebay for how best to proceed and I agree it's probably best not to give him my email address or phone number.

And even if it is true (cough, cough), if he can send an email he can send a shipping label. If he is truly incapacitated, then he needs to contact Ebay. It does not affect your claim.

No mishandling of any sort during shipping can just cause the crossover from the inside to detach into many pieces yet have no matching damage outside. It's clear that the seller shipped it that way without even trying to repair it...I mean if the seller has a "tech", that would've been an easy fix.

Yeah the more I think about it the more I think this is what happened. He probably shipped them to me already broken and is just trying to scam me.

I sincerely doubt it. What happens in shipping speakers is that the package gets dropped and heavy things inside rip loose, like those crossovers.
