Tannoy XT-8Fs -v- Quad 22L2s

I'm considering a speaker upgrade but seek some advice as pretty much my last step before committing to the Tannoys. I run a (recent upgrade) Perreaux R200i with my Quads.

Will Tannoy XT-8Fs give me a significant upgrade? I love the Quads and was especially impressed at how they still pump bass it low volume levels, although it is only with other people around that I often experience low volume.

I'm more than happy with the Quads but will I be ecstatic if I buy and wire up the Tannoys? I do like decent bass and have found my other speakers benefit from adding the budget sub I have, but the Quads do not sound better with the sub's bass. Although I do plan to use the sub for HT after a renovation when I have a large room to play with so perhaps the Tannoys will much better suit the larger room?

My real question is will there be a large difference or just (presumably at least) a small increase in sound quality. Very subjective questions but perhaps some of you can help here?

'while the tannoy's get very good reviews, i doubt they will be much of an upgrade over the Quads.
especially in a larger room.
If your thinking Tannoys Go Big! 12's or 15's

I like the way you're thinking but my bank manager will disagree :-)

I'll just put it this way:

When the Tannoy XT8F was released a number of years ago- we were there, at CES, running a display room for VAC, next door, in the 35th floor of the Venetian Hotel.

We were very interested in seeing and hearing them- as were just about everyone of note.

I remember being there, when John Atkinson and other people from Stereophile were looking and listening to them. Tannoy had not put a price listing on them. Many people were making "educated" guesses on prices- and the numbers ranged anywhere from about $6000 to $9000 a pair!

When the Tannoy rep came by, and mentioned that they were only $2600 a pair- a lot of jaws almost hit the floor...

So, the moral of the story is- those XT8Fs are some REMARKABLY GOOD speakers. Better than a lot of $10K speakers, from some pretty well-regarded manufacturers, in fact, from my own listening...

Regards,
Gordon.

Thanks people for your advice here. It was probably too much to hope for someone with direct experience with both the Quads and the Tannoys.
Cheesr!

Well FYI I pulled the trigger on some 50% off Focus Aria 948s. If they're not much much better than the Quads I'll likely sell them. Thanks people!

I’ve heard the 948’s many times. A very nice speaker. I considered them, but they were just a bit out of my price range when I was ready to buy something. Ended up with Tekton Double Impacts. They are also very nice.

Those are very good. All the bass you'll ever need- good, tight, plentiful, extended bass. Good balance too. Dynamics for days. Nothing seems to faze them.

Gordon.
