I have a 112 I replaced the belts on.
The service manual does not show how.
I had to remove the assembly-removing screws holding it on and unplug all cables.
Then, by eye-balling, I had to remove a couple screws, do a little prying, and got just enough room to remove and replace the belt.
Sorry, I'm not a deck-tech, but it got 'er done.

The entire mechanism in the 122 unplugs and can be removed by undoing (I think) 5 screws. I know there are 2 on the top, 2 on the bottom, and I think there's one on the left inside.

Then, when you have the whole mechanism in front of you, the motor plate can be unscrewed to clean everything and put the new belt on.

This is an easy to service deck, actually.

Any photos showing locations of those 5 screws! If I figure out to do it, I'll make some photo/pdf's of the sequence and post them. (Former work instruction writer @ Crown Broadcast)

Tascam 122 Deck removal - all in knowing how!

Per earlier, VERY helpful advice;

1. Disconnect 3 plugs connected to deck pcb.
2. Disconnect 3 more plugs connecting deck to main board.
3. Removed 2 screws from 'front rail' above cass. door.
4. Removed 2 screws from bottom on chassis.
5. Removed 1 screw from raised 'dimple' on chassis floor just behind left front foot.

Be gentle when removing deck - (watch out for counter reset plunger)

Photos following later! (Capstan belt intact, but stretched.)

Will order new belts! :bigok:

I suggest you look at the FF/REW idler tire while you have the mechanism out.

It gets glazed and doesn't grip well after so many years. May need replacing as well.

Hello potyec,

Well since you have Tinman here you are in pretty good hands already.
The belt is not hard to change it is just some people that have not worked on a hundred different models think this one is hard.
As to the reason the belt decayed it was not from sitting but because the curing of the rubber was hurried and even if it did not turn to goo as many of us service people have seen and had to deal with the belt if intact would be stretched anyway and need replacement. Clean Pinch Roller while deck is out and of course the fast wind idler. I also remove the flywheel and place oil in the bearing and then work the flywheel in and out to distribute the oil. This will help
make things easier on the motor. Place a drop of oil at the motor front bearing while it is pointing upward and allow to work in by rotation with finger. There are a lot of service things that Technician do that never get put on the report to keep the deck working right. You want to do those things too. When taking out the flywheel make sure the oil retention washer on the front of the capstan shaft is put back on and of course clean the capstan shaft with alcohol before engaging the Pinch Roller. Keep alcohol out of the bearing.
I still repair these things.

I know this is an old thread, but THANKS to you guys for posting this. I'm trying to resurrect a Tascam 122 that hasn't been turned on in 30 years and the Capstan isn't turning (I can move it with my fingers but it doesn't move when I press "play")

I suspect the belt has turned into goo, so I ordered a replacement. People still sell belts for this!

I hope somebody is still seeing this thread as it's been helpful to my efforts to rebuild an old 122 I just picked up. I pulled the transport chassis out successfully and got all the goo off the flywheel and pulley. After I pulled the motor mounting plate and lifted out the flywheel, I turned the chassis over and found a loose part on my table that wasn't there before. Can anybody tell me where this TINY washer came from? It's flat on one side but has this raised collar on the other side. Any ideas?

I'm guessing that it fell out of the side opposite the capstan shaft, but I'm not sure which way the washer shoulder should be oriented when I put it back. Any help on this?

Should be getting a 122 from eBay soon, and will likely need belts. The photos and info of the screws to remove are very helpful, thanks. Do you have to remove any of the front faceplate stuff too? Or just the cassette outer door?

If I remember correctly, you shouldn't have to remove the face plate.
Once again from memory, post # 6 seems like the way to go.

Nice deck!

Yes, that post and the one with the attached PDF of the deck screws were very helpful. I hope it's a good deck. Taking a bit of a gamble it's just the main belt for why the transport is not playing. It was one of the best I've seen cosmetically though. Rack "ears" still on it and look like they were never used (no scratches or scuffs). Only scratches I saw in the photos were on the cass door. Not bad, no big deal on that. I will probably have to remove things to deox the pots and switches. Fingers crossed it gets here OK and is repairable!

I bought one from Ebay in beautiful condition, not working.
Replaced the belt and good to go!
Hope that you have the same good luck.

I didn't need to do any de-oxing.
I wouldn't do it unless it needs it.
Why invite trouble?

I actually use mine without the door to make it easier to clean the heads and pinch roller.

Hope it works out for you!

Yeah, roger that. I'll get it running first and then test it. If the switches and pots are OK then no deoxit.

Well, I finally got the deck. Replaced the belts. Counter was weak, capstan was melted and a mess. Now it plays. But...(there's always a but). Fast forward and rewind are weak, and have a tick...tick...tick sound when running. I think it needs new idler tires. See attached photo. If you look closely you can see a small "divot" in the rubber in one of the tires. Can anyone tell me where to get the tires, and what part number to order? If you have seen this and you think it's something else please let me know.

Also, if it is the tires, any advice on how to go about replacing them? Things to watch out for and technique for removing them.

Thanks

See my reply on tapeheads regarding the idler tires.
I'm currently working on a Tascam 122, both belts were goo, and was able to replace with new ones, however when I put a tape in and hit play the right supply pully doesn't move. In looking at it from the top, it seems like the reel motor isn't moving. Would that just be an oiling thing? Any suggestions?
Thanks
Barry
