I own 2 of these and would recommend:
Tascam 122.
upload_2021-4-24_11-20-21.jpegVery robust. Never been a fan of dual decks. I would rather put my money in 1 good transport.
Others more knowledgeable than me will chime in.

thanks for the reply.

That's a good looking deck and having two must be sweet. The 322 is the first decent deck used I've seen for sale.
All else has been Sharp etc.cheapo stuff. Wondering availability of new cassettes ? Still debating on buying one for
the 100 or so tapes sitting in the closet.

$100.00 ? Buy or not ?

Not much info out there that I can find. Anyone have idea when this built, things to check, problems to look out for.
Was this considered a decent deck, mid level deck etc ?

Living in the country has it's advantages but audio is not one of them !

Thinking if no info on the net it may not be a good buy?

It's probably a good price, but before you plunk down your money, try to find a service manual and see what's involved in replacing the belts. That will almost definitely need to be done.

Good advise thanks, I'll see whats available find, there only open 2 days a week and don't think it's going anywhere soon.

@swechsler Thanks for the links. The manual easy find belts are a no go. Not even a parts number from Tascam
and no mention off from Marrs communications LLC so thinking the good people of AK saved me from mistake.
Thanks all.

Edit. will call Marrs to confirm but not listed so would be surprised if so.

Ok, if you say so....
Have you read any of the numerous Marrs threads here at AK?
Mr. Marrs is dead, the daughter is allegedly a deadbeat seller who is being taken to court over fraudulent activities.

But maybe you will be lucky enough to get a response. But don't order there if you do.

Evidently not, thanks for the heads up. Have decided that if Tascam didn't have a part # and stated that the belts were not available from them when the unit was made it's not one of any value, to me anyway.

Thanks again fellow AKers !

Most TASCAM decks were rebadges or slight redesigns of TEAC models. For example, the TASCAM 122 shown in the second post was also sold as the TEAC C-3. But I couldn't find a TEAC version of the 322.

In my search online , ran across a site or two with TEAC-TASCAM in the title. TEAC must not have wanted to be associated with as the manual states if no corresponding part # on many parts that part was not available.
Made in 2001 bet a lot of the buyers were chapped when it came time for a belt or whatever. Always thought
these names were some of the top decks. Go figure shows what I know.

In 1973-74 I had a new Akai RTR with 8 track in the side, was very fond of it. Someone was fonder as came home
from Halloween party and complete system was gone.

Since you don't think it's going anywhere, next time they are open take a cassette, plug the unit in and see if all functions work.
If it works once you bought it you could the try to measure the belts (or wait until if/when one breaks) and Google for replacements.

The Tascam 122 Mk II, as previously suggested, was built like a tank but had 2 known “problems”. The variable pitch control pot was known to fail and the motor speed board was prone to failure if any caps leaked out. The surface mount components would flake off or lift.

if your unit shares similar parts, it might be hard to repair since parts are no longer available from the manufacture. How am I so well versed in these units you might ask? I have a dead 122 MK II with the runaway motor problem.

usually a recap will solve the problem but it didn’t fix mine.

the 322 doesn’t have great specs for recording so you might want to keep looking. If you can find a working 122 MKII unit, a simple recap on the motor board will give you a studio/station quality deck for many years

tape heads.com is a good place to look for info on the 322. They don’t have a high opinion of it from what I’ve seen

@goodolpg

Tried google for belts with no success which is no surprise as the manual states they have no part number and are unavailable.

@bigcaddy64

Understandable that tape heads.com has a low opinion, after some research so do I.

Edit.
Sooner or later will run across one worth having, it will probably be on barter town.

My post was based on you testing the unit, verifying it works, then buying it, and then measuring for belts if the need arose. Once you had dimensions you could see what is available. It would be way too convenient if you could just find belts based on manuf., and model #.
Sounds like you are going to pass this one up anyways, which is probably the wise choice.

Will be on the look out for a working affordable 122 MK111 or maybe something better? I stream all my music as it is
so not a priority. Seems I should sell the TT and other equipment.
