Just purchased one of these reel to reels , im not a musician or recording person I just wonder how this can be compared to other decks of the Period

I used to own for a short period a teac X 1000 R would the Tascam BR-20 be looked at asa higher quality machine and can around £300 or $450 with 8 ampex 456 tapes and spools be looked at as a good price

thanks

The Ampex tapes will be trash-sheddy. bake them if you want to recover the material, but just load the reels with nice new production tape.

The BR-20 was Tascam's last machine, and a really nice deck. It won't play the tapes you made on your X-1000R due to being half track stereo, but will record and playback really well. $450 is a nice price.

thanks for the reply so soon, can you let me know what I should look out for and explain about the tape issue?, can you buy tape without reels, I had reel to reel years ago and am looking forward to Analogue recording, would this tascam be looked at as a better model than the Teac x-2000 M and R models thanks

Also can I connect a cd player direct to the XLRs , my cd has XLRs on the back or do you need amn amp to boost the signal thanks

HELL YES it's better than Any Teac X2000 series deck.

You can buy pancakes without reels at a lower cost.

Yes you can connect your CD player directly to it.

About the tapes not being compatible...

Above is a prepresentation of 1/4" tape the way that the BR-20 records stuff on tape. it uses half the tape for the left channel and half the tape for the right. No"back side" to the tape. Advantages of: better quality, more dropout prevention, better signal stability.

This is your X1000R:

As you can see it puts more tracks on the tape, but the BR-20 can't read or recod that properly.

The only thing is how do you get the unspooled tape on the reels that one seems confusing to a new convert like me, also i've read a few posts about Head cleaning and Rubber cleaning on these machines any recommended products on ebay would be great as im from the UK
