Td 124 mk2 Motor Overheating

Just rebuilt the motor on my latest TD 124 mk2 project (this is the fifth motor I've worked on) and it's running VERY hot. Like so hot I can smell it. Like so hot a small drop of water will sizzle and evaporate on the side of the casing. This is after about fifteen minutes of run time. It's never stopped functioning but I'm afraid to let it run much longer than an hour. I've done the following:
- heat cleaned bushings and reimpregnated with sae 20, "4 in 1" brand electric motor oil
- used same thrust plate but flipped it over
-ensured original ball bearing was in good condition and in place (used a bit of grease to keep it in place during re assembly)
-lightly polished both sides of shaft

A note on the current wiring of my turntable: I've temporarily bypassed the resistor/neon lamp as it was burned out when I received this unit. The switch is still in use and functions well.

The motor is dead quiet and I get spin down times of about 25 seconds with the belt off and pulley installed.

I've completely disassembled and reassembled three times with the same result. The previous four motors I've worked on were not even close to this hot.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I picked up a laser tach when I rebuilt my motor. It was useful in that I was able to align the motor for best speed.
When I had a speed issue unrelated to the motor, the tach enabled me to narrow the problem down.

Personally, I think you should verify the motor wiring and voltage selector. When my motor was out of alignment, it didn't get hot enough to stink up the joint...it just stopped.
 
Thanks for your replies, gentlemen. I dismantled the motor again and followed each wire right to the coils. Sure enough, I discovered that the two green wires were fused together, ever so slightly; probably by the soldering iron of some well meaning tinkerer or tech. Glad I didn't blow the thing up but it's little issues like this that make these project tables such puzzles, and, ultimately affordable to chaps like me. That said, it's a bit of wake up call to check everything THOROUGHLY before plugging in, especially when its history is unknown.
 
Whenever I come across an older piece of equipment, the first thing I check is if the correct fuse is installed. An incorrect value speaks volumes about its service and maintenance history.

heyraz - great advice. Should have read this before I wasted an entire Saturday trying to determine why an amp I bought kept blowing the fuse. The “tech” used 1A fuses where 3A should have been. Made for a frustrating day and why I wasted another Saturday going thru the amp in detail.
