TD160 w/Linn Basik LVX turntable at 550USD, is it a good buy ?

Guys,

I've found a TD160 Super Walnut Base w/Linn Basik LVX - Tone Arm on craiglist at my area. The turntable is in a good shape and working condition. Is it a good buy at this price range ?

I'm not too familiar with Thorens turntable but i've heard it's a good turntable. I've also checked some info online about this TD160 and known that this series has some issue with the tone-arm. Basically, the tone-arm needs to be replaced by a better one for better sonic sound.

Also, how does this TD160 Super Walnut Base w/Linn Basik LVX compare to the Technics SL1200 - SL 1900 turntable in term of sound, performance and reliability? Currently, i'm owning a Technics SL 1500 and very pleased with it in every aspect.

The TD-160 and TD-160 Super are different tables. The 160 Super was a tweaked-out high end version of the 160 and was designed to compete with a Linn LP-12, and the Linn Arm is a definite improvement over one of the Thorens arms.

The sound is probably very differnent from your Technics. Belt drive afficiantos (like myself) will tell you that this is an excellent table. Direct drive people will usually swear by the SL-1200.

I don't think that the value questions are allowed in this particular forum however.

I don't know about the price but I think that it will definitely be a step over your current Technics.
 
Hi i own a 160 and have modded it as far as it can go,and then put it back to stock mostly.
I will tell you it can sound as good as a 1 grand table.But...
It's cheaply made except for the bearing and platter.
It's 70's enginering at it's worst or maybe a typical 70's effort.
If it were me i would save my 550 save a bit and buy a better modern table.

Once you look into a 160 you end up scratching your head and wondering how the thing sounds so good?
If it were me for 550 i would look for a last generation vpi or one of the lower sota's.
A used rega 3.
 
That seems a bit steep to me. That said, I have a Linn Axis with the Basik arm and I think its a good arm.
