TDL Studio 4's? Uhmmm...

Those Tdl studio 4s at $1500 aren't too expensive. The last sets of tdl monitors the 4 way version sell around £1200 on ebay UK. The studio 4 speakers are very rare in England. I think you will be impressed with them. They should sound quite laidback with superb bass extension. They do not fatigue either. They are not the fastest speakers in the world nor do they the best midrange and top end. They are a good all rounder with the best bass extension to be found in any loudspeaker. I recapped mine (monitors) and it tightened up the bass and really focused the midrange and tweeter. They would also benefit being on either the original stands or a plinth at least 3-4" high. This will again improve the bottom end. Thanks, Mike

Thank you Mike... good info and thanks for the reassurance!!! I saw some of your other posts from a couple years back... good to see you're still in the TDL fold!!!

Well... I think we can all appreciate the apprehension we all feel when we procure a grand or two of audio gear online.

  1. Will the seller follow through?
  2. Is this some sort of scam?
  3. Will the equipment get packed properly and arrive in one piece?

Well, I have to admit I had some moments with these!  :tears:

But I am happy to report that I have passed phase 2... I have a FedEx Tracking number and they are on their way!

Now let's hope the Phase 3 hurdle is cleared.

Wow, well I'm like a kid at Christmas right now. Picked up the boxes from Fed-Ex and got them home today. Everything was just as advertised and arrived safe and sound!!!

They look gorgeous and the only thing I can find wrong with them is some "dents" in one of the tweeters. Nothing major but not "perfect". Cabinets are in awesome condition but need some "feeding". All in all I'd say they are 9/10.

I'm a happy guy!!!

Pictures to follow!!!

On a separate note I wanted to acknowledge where these came from. They use to be owned by one Grant Reuther of Saginaw, Mich. Grant passed away at the young age of 44 and had owned these as new. Shipped from TDL in the original boxes they came to me in.

From what I understand from his wife Kerry, Grant use to work at the Listening Room in Saginaw. Not sure of his role there, but she said he dealt with a lot of high end audio. The fact that he had these as his personal system says a lot about Grant.

I'm fortunate to have the opportunity to listen to these now. As I told Kerry, Grant would be happy to know that his personal speakers ended up in great hands, and I'm happy to have worked with Kerry to make this opportunity happen! :thmbsp:

Ok... here we go.

These are about the limit that Fed-Ex I would assume handle, They probably tip the scales at close to 100lbs each.

Unpacked they stand about the same height as my TLS-50's on stands. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for.

Some of the Damage to one of the tweets... I don't think it's that big of an issue.

And of course that beautiful bass driver. By the way, the surround is an "inny" rather then an "outty"... even though it may look the other way. It is really wide as you can see and is heavy duty rubber... Uhmmm... Does this have anything to do with that beautiful Bass Extension? ;)

On to the Brit Board for a shoot out!!!

Congradulations!

I remember the Court Street Listening Room in Saganaw VERY well... that's where I first heard TDLs and I bought an unusual linear tracking air bearing tone arm there as well. It was a great little shop. IIRC, they sold some IMFs out of there as well.

I look forward to hearing your impressions of your latest score.

That's right... this is in your neck of the lower 48! Well I'll just say again, I'm happy that I have been given the good fortune to take on these really special speakers from Grant and in effect help out Kerry and her young family. Good Karma has a way of spreading itself! :thmbsp:
