TEAC 2300SD Smoke...

Hi all. I just picked up a TEAC 2300sd. I know very little about R2R machines yet, but know this one records fairly well. When I was a kid my dad had one but wouldn't let me explore it like his other audio gear. Anyways the TEAC looks to be in great condition. The guy said he maintained it regularly over the years, but hadn't used in at least two. We fired it up and hit play. No speakers connected but tape moved, rewind and VUs worked fine so I bought it for $50.

I brought her home, plugged her in and started putzing around with the tape. Suddenly the smell of burning wires filled the air and smoke plumed from inside the case. I quickly turned it off and unplugged it. Now I'm worried there is damage.

Questions:

Does anyone have thoughts about what happened?

Is this model worth sinking some dough into at a repair shop?

I think that the 2300SD is the most desirable of the 2300 series. I've read that they made other sonic improvements when they added Dolby to that model.

Well your going to have to open the unit up and inspect where the damage is at.

Satcom 123 offers sound advise. Remove the rear panel and look for burnt components. That's for starters.
Word of caution: If you're not familar working on electronics, STOP. There may be dangerous voltages present.
