I recently tried to align my Teac 3300-2T, with a known perfect full track 15k alignment tape, and I noticed a strange frequency response. Not using an oscilloscope here, just the meters on the deck, but the left channel is peaking at -10db, while the right channel is peaking at -1db, at 7.5ips. So I cleaned the heads really thoroughly, and reran the test..same result. On a lark, I increased the speed to 15ips, and there was a 1db increase in both channels, but the ratio of the channels remained the same...so there is not a descending HF rolloff that I can discern. So it IS flat to 30khz, to a point...
What would cause this? The head does not look to have an opening gap. I cleaned the output level controls and tape/source switch and have the same result.
