TEAC 3440 Mod

Hey there tape masters. I bought a TEAC A-3440 from a fellow that inherited it from his dad. The dad was a musician who did a ton of recording using Fostex, Tascam and TEAC decks and sound boards. The A-3440 has a mod just under the left guidepost. Has the number 427 on it. Is anyone familiar with this?

I think you are close. Based on it not providing any value at this point, I removed it. Is some sort of photocell.

Probably to detect "end of tape" though it already has a sensor for that
