TEAC 4010S Pinch Roller Trouble

Hey there,
I just fixed up my TEAC 4010S Tape Deck.
I replaced the belt which was torn apart and ripped like melted gum(Literally)

Anyways, pretty much back on par, except that when it plays, It starts to swurve like a skateboard going REALLY fast.
This is on the Pinch Roller.

I cleaned the Pinch Roller with special Rubber Prep and Rubber Restore cleaner that works very well.

Also, I oiled the metal pole connected to the pinch roller.
I made sure that none of it got anywhere near the tape path or Pinch Roller itself.


Any ideas why it would be swurving like this?



Also, when the tape locks into the middle of the Pinch Roller, it works fine and it stays in place.

And, when played in reverse, it plays well and doesn't really move around the Pinch Roller at all.



Help would be wonderful.



Other than that, she is working very well.

I'm pretty proud of myself for actually bringing the deck back to life.


I'm pretty new to Tape Decks, but I have learned quite a lot so far.



I'd really like to find the solution to this Pinch Roller thing.

How freely does the pinch roller move up and down? The Teac machines are famous for having grease that hardens - making the pinch roller arm sticky in some places. This results in inadequate pinch roller pressure and the tape sliding around. The pinch roller should move with very little effort. If it feels sticky or is binding, the pinch roller arm assembly will need to be removed from the machine and the old grease removed, then new machine oil applied.

Make sure to resurface the pinch roller before using the rubber rejuvenation treatment. 1000 grit sandpaper works well for this.

It moves around pretty well.

But I guess it could use cleaning in the whole assembly.


How should I go about removing the old grease?


Any tips on the cleaning and dismantling of the Pinch Roller assembly?

I haven't performed that before.


When I had the front panel off, I noticed that the Pinch Roller extended over to the left side. Is this extension apart of the Pinch Roller Assembly?

There is a spring that had a lot of Goldish-Brown melted goo that looked like earwax and was really sticky.
Is this the grease you are talking about?



I'll try and find a picture of the deck when it is open to show you.


About the sandpaper, how much should I sand down?

Incorrect holdback or take up tension can cause the tape to curl. The problem may go away with time...the rubber may be too sticky!

How should I go about removing the old grease?
Denatured alcohol and qtips work well for this. Make sure to clean all surfaces throughly

It's somewhat tricky. The head assembly will need to be loosened and has to hang away while you remove the flywheel support and pinch roller arm. The screws that secure the flywheel and pinch roller arm are on the opposite side of the front panel.

This is the kind of grease you'll encounter, however in bearing assemblies its usually turned hard, greenish or even a powdery appearance




About the sandpaper, how much should I sand down?
As much is required for the surface to look even, uniform and free of tape marks.
