So I bought thi Teac A-100 cassette deck for $15 from some rich guy who said it just needs belts. I buy a belt kit for it for $25 put the 4 belts in and it still dosn't work. It occasionaly will start to play (have not plugged it into an amp yet) then slow down and stop and then disengage,FF/RW does the same thing. Mostly if you hit play/ff/rw it just disengages after about 4 or 5 seconds. I checked to see if flywheel moves freely and it does so I'm out of ideas and almost out of patience with these "vintage" cassette decks.

Four options:

1. Give up.
2. Get a service manual and repair it the right way.
3. Pay a tech to fix it for you.
4. Buy another vintage deck but this time test it first.

Hi, Does the motor work when play is pressed? Does it have torque? It may need some lubing. Do the spindles turn without binding?:scratch2:

Are the belts the right size?Too tight would cause the same problem. may need a tire or clean the tire if it has one.

Thanks,
John.:music::D

I agree 100%. The drive motor may just need lubrication. That was the problem with a deck I owned that had the same symptoms. 1 drop of oil on the end of a toothpick very carefully applied to where the motor shaft exits the motor (it's probably a DC motor with a sleeve bearing) should do it.

It may also need a good cleaning, especially if the precious owners were smokers or the deck was exposed to smoke/fumes/air from the kitchen or a wood burning stove/fireplace.
