TEAC A-3340S Help

Please do not use the mic inputs....they are super noisy, and no substitute for a good mixer.
 
I have to admit I've never actually used my A-3440 for multi-track recording (I only got it going at all a couple of weeks ago) so my previous post about how to do 7 tracks/2nd generation or 11 tracks/3rd generation was just my theory of how to 'solve the puzzle', not me speaking from experience. Now I'm thinking about it again, I reckon even more pre-planning is necessary than I reckoned on. If we go back to my steps to record 7 tracks, I have a question for everyone:

  1. Record on tracks 1, 2 and 3.
  2. Bounce tracks 1, 2 and 3 onto track 4. Now all three recordings are on track 4 and tracks 1, 2 and 3 are free again.
  3. Record on tracks 1 and 2.
  4. Bounce tracks 1 and 2 onto track 3. Now both new recordings are on track 3 and tracks 1 and 2 are free again.
  5. Record on track 1.
  6. Record on track 2.

It seems to me that the bounce at step 2 can be done via the playback head but the bounce at step 4 can only be done via the sync head, otherwise the new material you are transferring to track 3 will lag behind the material previously bounced to track 4. Is that right? If so, that means that you need to plan to use the two tracks recorded at step 3 for parts that do not require high frequency response because the output of the sync head is nowhere near as good as that of the playback head (since the "sync head" is really the record head and is optomised for recording rather than playback). Does that make sense?

I have an idea/question:

I have been looking at 24 track reel to reels.
And they have the super-wide 2" tape to hold all the tracks.

Does anyone know if when the 24 tracks are recorded, could they be mixdown and transfered to a 1/4" tape on the TEAC A-3340S or something equivalent? Maybe a Half-Track Mastering Reel?
Possibly break the 24 tracks into 4 groups of six?

You say to not use the mic inputs, do you mean direct?
Do you mean, use the line instead of mic?
Because otherwise, the sound Can't get into the thing.
