They only way to engage my record light is if I press and hold the record button then while I do that lift the pinch roller. The lift comes on.. but once I let the pinch roller down the lift comes off.. this is with the front plate removed exposing the electronics

This is the way it's supposed to work. When you hold the buttons and hit play, the mechanism goes up and closes the record switch the same as when you lift the pinch roller. If it's not working you might need to clean and lube the mechanism, or maybe adjust the switch a bit. The good thing is that the electronics are working.
 
Are you physically moving the pinch roller up? The linkage should move freely, if it doesn't, the linkage needs the old, sticky grease removed, and fresh applied. The procedure for recording( I think. The deck is parked for the moment.) is, hold the record buttons, then hit play.... it sounds like your problem is the play solenoid / linkage...does it play a tape?
